Because I am something of an old I remember when Billy Crystal regularly hosted the Oscars and the year this was up for Best Picture he opened the show with a song about each nominated film-- for this, it was

"Those lips, those eyes--
SURPRISE!
It's The Crying Game!"

Not the worst joke given the era but the other day I heard a song and recognized the tune he used for that line.

The song's called "The Tender Trap".

Do you think he picked it on purpose?

The movie was always overshadowed by the trans reveal. But honestly it isn’t a bad legacy, especially given how attitudes have changed towards it the last four decades.

I guess I'm just happy people still know it/watch it? It was an excellent movie, and really one of the first I'd ever seen with a transgender character treated with even a modicum of respect and understanding.

I am old enough to remember the furor over Siskel spoiling the plot twist on Siskel & Ebert. The debate over the ethics of revealing spoilers feels so quaint now.

I know it’s controversial because of the ugly way the reveal is handled (the Ace Ventura references reflect how that kind of queer panic became a trope that quickly morphed into a frequent cruel joke) but the romance does end on an optimistic note and it’s overall a really good thriller. Neil Jordan is far from perfect In how he’s handled trans stories but it’s something he’s done repeatedly and I think he has an empathetic interest in it beyond plot gimmickry.

I got hate for disagreeing with a secret that had no comments for a day. I explained that I commented just so there'd be something. Lo and behold, there appears a few replies out of nowhere, on the second day, no less. And some more hate for me.

An anon even made a post about negative comments and that it's better to have none.

I always feel bad when I see a secret with no comments. I try and think of something to say, but a lot of the time it is for a fandom or something I have no knowledge about. :(

Yeah, having no comments suck. But I had a comment once just saying that they feel bad for me for not having comments. And it was worse. Somehow this is so condescending

Tariq! What a rollercoaster that character was. The first few times he was on I was annoyed and like "Janine, what the heck" but then he definitely charmed me. There is just something about that charming goofball. I also love how he just pops up in random places. I don't want him to become a main character or anything, but I enjoy it when he shows up.

It will unfortunately always be that way when creators swap a character that is a popular example of one minority group to an example of another minority group

I don't dislike trans Bridget, but I would have preferred, for example, Bridget remaining a girly cis boy and May being a trans girl. Why not both

It's totally valid to be uncomfortable with things like that and not want to see it. You'd only be like the antis if you thought no one else should be allowed to make it or see it and attacked anyone who thought otherwise.

Gotta say I kinda agree except for me I don’t think it’s suspicious. I didn’t pay attention at first because the Aquaman stuff seemed far fetched and from untrustworthy source. And even this newest one if not a great source, it could be someone trying to get revenge. But I don’t think so. I think it’s more likely they were punished with their stuff getting cut because of how they responded to him, not the other way around.
