I think there was a difference in that the joke wasn't at the expense of Bridget, but at the guys who got weirded out or upset when they found out she was a guy (using the canon at the time). Bridget wasn't the character that the player was supposed to have a negative perception of, it was supposed to be "Oops, this cute badass girl is actually a boy... so what, he's still cute and badass!"
