Plus every time his poor decision making gets him in trouble, he defaults to "oh woe is me, I am a victim" mode. He got done for drunk driving at one point in the show, which was in every way his own choice, but still feels like the world is inconveniencing him because of it. His Modern Day wife becomes a millionaire and he gets butthurt by her success.

The worst part, the truly worst part, though, is the writers don't seem to realise they've written a scumbag instead of a sympathetic hero. That is what makes him a real scumbag.
