When the standard media portrayal of ideal cishet guy bestfriendship and found family is that you mock each other mercilessly while you love each other like brothers deep down, lots of men are convinced it's true and try to make that translate into other relationships and don't get that "make fun of you cause I assume you know I still like you" is not welcome everywhere. Those types get even more confused when other men don't respond to it positively.

I'm not saying it's smart or right, but the idea comes from somewhere at least. If it's meant well, it's not just men being randomly weird.
