I think Tom Cruise actually did some quite good acting in the first Mission Impossible. The earnest confusion, the desperation, the impish mischievousness. And the chemistry he had with Vanessa Redgrave.

I’m sure some others could have done a good job, maybe equally good, but not just anyone.

In the sequels after that, I think he’s bringing a lot less to the role and many action actors could do it just as well.

True enough. In the first movie he was a fresh character, at least.

I feel the same way about most long-running action franchises. The first Fast and the Furious was well cast and Vin Diesel and Paul Walker had arguably too much chemistry and drowned out the actual het romances even as a non shipper, then it dragged and dragged into self flanderization and not being iconic any more. What are we on, 10? 11?
