OH. MY. GOD.

FOLKLORE SECRET.

/heart failure

I ship Ellen and Keats, too! :D This fandom seriously needs to happen, like, NOW.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR THE FOLKLORE SECRET.

Seriously, one of the prettiest and best games in a long time. It didn't nearly get the recognition it deserved when it came out.

And yes, more Ellen and Keats, please. Though, I can totally understand shipping Ellen with others, particularly Scarecrow. Scarecrow... ♥

OP

(Anonymous) 2009-10-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Scarecrow is Ellen's whipping boy. 'Nuff said!

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
!!!! Folklore!!

I've been hooked on that game ever since I beat it. I still play it just to fuck around with Folks, it's so gorgeous.

I don't know where the fandom is either, but I always intend to draw more fanart of it (http://halcyonjazz.livejournal.com/271532.html). It's not a lot but it's something at least?

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Random, but I followed your link and then read your write-up of the game's pros and cons and I just have to comment that I agree with every word you said there. XD; The game had a lot of potential and it was visually stunning, but it fell short of greatness in a lot of respects (and if there was a fandom at all, I think there's a LOT of potential fic/art fodder there).

Thanks for putting it into words better than I ever could. :)

wow this became longer than I thought ffff sorry

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man yeah. I'm very conflicted with Folklore--in that I LOVE it so amazingly much. I am extremely fond of it and I'm not kidding when I say I play it like every three days just to fuck around in it, but it's also a game I can't recommend in good conscience because... it has so many problems in its narrative, and I only fell in love with it after it kicked me in the teeth with THAT AWESOME ENDING.

WHICH NO ONE HAS GOTTEN TO.

SO NO ONE KNOWS [SPOILER] AND HOW AWESOME IT IS TO MAKE ME FORGIVE EVERYTHING.

(I think my issue with Folklore is that it's that rare game where it would have made a better movie than a game, simply because containing the story in 2 hours would have tightened up SO MUCH of the pacing and made it a lot more compact and well-told. Actually I'm still secretly hoping it'd be adapted cinematically one day.)

I'm still the only person I know who's like beat that game inside and out s-sob, the only person I have to fangirl with is my BFF and it's only because I told her it. In detail.

I want to get back to drawing for it, like, all the time.

No problem; I love discussion!

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I love it too. Although I suspect because I don't have a high def TV to play it on I probably missed out on the full experience. Someday I'll play it again as it was made to be played and most likely be even more blown away by the graphics than I already was.

As far as the narrative goes, though, I spent most of the game wondering when the hell we were going to see some aspect of Ellen's character beyond "I must find my mother!" and "Woe, my past!" Everyone kind of got hosed in the character development department. XD;

I'm happy to report that I have beaten the game (including the extra sidequests from the Playstation store)! And the ending was glorious. Would be happy to talk about all the spoilerific stuff you want, although maybe we should take it to PMs in that case...?

Definitely with you about it making a great movie. I'd watch it. Full CGI? DO IT NOW!

I've written one fanfic for it so far (there's not even a section for it on ff.net *cries*) and hope to write more in the future. The one I wrote was kind of a character study for me to see if I could write Ellen and Keats in-character at all.

op

(Anonymous) 2009-10-06 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Where is this fanfic you speak of?! Oh, and there's a section in ff.net now, very few fics though, one I especially like.

I never had a problem with the narrative to be honest, since from the beginning I've always expected it to be a full-blown mystery game. I love how nuanced the characters here are (heck, not just Ellen and Keats but even the minor ones if you've done their quests) along with their developments (which I appreciated for its subtlety).

It's definitely a game worth experience on HD TV--although I think that's true for every PS3 game, but Folklore especially.

I was so glad to discover that Ellen actually does have a personality that shows up pretty adorably in all the sidequests. Actually completing the sidequests (especially the DLC ones) were my favorite parts of the story, they filled up a lot of character development holes as well as missing plot elements.

HAHA MAN THAT'S BE AWSOME, though I was thinking more of live-action ghost story setting. That'd be fucking sweet.

WOULD IT BE TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR A LINK? I know my friend also wrote a small ficlet, here (http://moonsheen.livejournal.com/115409.html?thread=1021137#t1021137).

JSDKG YOUR FANDOM IS RIGHT HERE.

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right? The OP and everyone in this thread should just get our butts over to [livejournal.com profile] bridge_house and revive the place!

DO IIIIIT! (I will too!)

[identity profile] aeris-888.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Heehee. You don't know how ridiculous this secret is making me smile. It makes me sad how criminally underrated this game is (although, yeah, it does has its flaws but I find the pros outshining the cons by loads so--), to think I haven't enjoyed any game this fcking much since playing Xenosaga and Shadow of the Colossus. How pathetic is that!

I ship them too! Well, Keats/Ellen/Scarecrow that is though Belgae/Livane has the other side of my heart muchly as well.

Does it even have a comm btw? *pleading look*

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] bridge_house. It's been pretty dead up until now, but I think that if the OP and everyone from this comment thread headed on over there, we could possibly breathe some life back into it! *crossing her fingers*

[identity profile] aeris-888.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I will. Thanks!

Read your fic by the way. Loved it! XD

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! The idea of this fandom actually taking off makes me very happy, indeed...

zomg Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

[identity profile] aerikas.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, Folklore. I love that game and recommend it to everyone I know with a PS3.

While I favor Ellen/Keats (mostly because I favor Keats :P) I can definitely see Ellen with everyone else. It's just part of the intriguing relationships all the characters had.

[identity profile] jewel-song.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually just got a PS3 slim, and this is the only game I have for it right now. I'm currently in the Underwater world, but I've been shipping Ellen/Keats since the game started, lol!

And the scarecrow is made of win!

I just wish I had more time to play. D: Damn college.

OP

(Anonymous) 2009-10-07 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you'd ship them even more by the end of the game, I can assure you. XD

There's a comm by the way. Please do join!

[identity profile] scarf-luvah.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, THERE TOTALLY NEEDS TO BE A FANDOM FOR THIS, RIGHT NAO!!!!

I really want to write an entire fanfiction series through the point of view of all of the folk based on the tiny descriptions that they are given in the menu. (I know it's kind of weird, but one day I will do it too!!)

Although I can't really say I ship Keats and Ellen, I am all over Ellen and Suzette, FTW!!!!

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I am totally down with reading Folk stories (pun sort of intended)! DOOOO IIIIT!

Also: [livejournal.com profile] bridge_house /shameless plugging of the Folklore LJ comm

[identity profile] looneymoon.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
OMG FOLKLORE FANDOM COME TO LIFE RIGHT NOW Y/Y?

I totally agree, my ships for this game are Keats/Ellen, Ellen/Suzette, Ellen/Keats/Suzette, Ellen/Scarecrow and Keats/Belgae. er, I think that's everything pretty much :'D

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I'm just here to generally agree with people here about Folklore being underrated. Amusingly enough for me, it's not the story that's the main draw but the gameplay. I am a complete and utter SUCKER for games that let you gather TONS of different powers/spells/abilities because it gives me a power-trip unlike anything else. Not to say I don't find the story interesting, but I'm not very far in it yet: I just love summoning giant goddamn bugbears and impaling people on it. I AM THE LORD OF IRISH MYTHOLOGY, ALL IT'S BEASTS ARE MINE TO COMMAND etc.

That said when I finish up the game I will most likely be eager to dive into fandom: the story seems pretty interesting so far, so I'ma probably be really hooked by the end.
