Have you ever thought about getting a separate journal for your fics/art/discussions/etc? That might help repel some of the unwanted attention you are getting. Also, I don't think you are obliged to add everyone (be it on messanger or lj) just because they want to add you. Or try to enforce a rule saying that you will only add people back once you got to know them better.

There are many popular BNFs out there who are doing it this way, maybe it will work for you as well. Good luck!

Not personally, no.

But I do know who you are and stalk your awesomness. ;)

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
LOL!

[identity profile] cryogenia.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
It is possible to be a recluse in this fandom (or in any fandom) if you choose it. If having a high profile freaks you out, get a separate journal for rl/rants/whatever; start a new sockpuppet identity to talk to people, etc. Your close fandom friends you can tell to come talk to you, others you can leave on your fic/art journal. It may sound harsh but if you have a hard time keeping up with the internet for one reason or another (as I do, for health issues), it works out.

[identity profile] militsa.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
If your pic is relevant I am in this fandom, and I've seen so-called BNFs come and go. (I think the BNF term is overused and often stretched.) It happens, and people get over it rather more easily than any of us like to think. There's still an old WIP that I wish the author would finish but well, I can live with it, and an artist I love who doesn't draw my pairing anymore. But! Life goes on. You shouldn't worry about other people, if fandom is stressing you out then you should take a break and not worry about other people, you don't have a responsibility to them. It's just a hobby after all. For close online or fandom friends, you'll probably stay in touch, but it's kind of overdramatic to think that you'd be letting a lot of random people down. Don't be so hard on yourself!

[identity profile] raved.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
:( I'm sorry you feel like that. I agree with other people-- make a second account or take a break.
But you know, it's only fandom... nothing serious. It's times like this that may call for some selfishness. You shouldn't be too hard on yourself if you want out. ♥

One of the most freeing and awesome things is to realize that you are never as popular as you think you are. People won't miss you as much as you think, and even though they are praising you, the praise is probably not hero-worship as much as it is polite and friendly approval.

So just go away for a while. If you need permission, you have it. See for yourself just how unimportant you are in the grand scheme of things, so in the future, you won't take internet BNF-dom so seriously.

Your REAL friends will stick with you and stand by you no matter how quiet you become, and you can always elect to talk to whoever you yourself truly like whenever you feel like it. Be the master of your own fandom experience and allow yourself to make your own personal pleasure your top priority. So long as you are not selfish to the point of being mean, it is alright to protect yourself this way. It is not only alright, it is completely advisable.

[identity profile] mochalatt3.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
i think every self-proclaimed BNF needs to read your comment

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] hikaru-9.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Pic is relevant to fandom, yes? *waves to fma fan that she has probably seen around*

Either way, fandom is a hobby, and hobbies are about what you want and what makes you happy. If your hobby feels like a job, or makes you feel uncomfortable, then it's time to re-evaluate. All the others are right, there's many things you can do. You can leave, sock puppet, just continue on the way you have, or any other number of ideas. You're not going to disappoint all your 'followers' to the point of drastic measures. People move on, or fall of the face of the net all the time. And while it's sad to see them go, fandom will move on, and you can set up shop in another fandom where hardly anyone will know your name. Fandom is about doing what you enjoy and sharing love of something with others.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
For fear of sounding like a bitch, I tend to doubt if someone is really a BNF when they're the ones saying so. :/

Either way, it's just fandom. If you feel like dropping off the face of the internet, you have every right to do as you so choose. You can be a little selfish. Basically a huge THIS to what everyone else has been saying. If being a BNF interferes with your enjoyment of fandom, take a step back and create a secondary account where you can be more anonymous.

Truth. You speak it.

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like most of the people who say that they're BNFs when making secrets are BSing anyway. I consider you a BNF if I've never been to your fandom, or I've only shortly dabbled in it, and I've sill heard of you.
(In fanart terms, I think of BNFs as people like Astrima/Imagni, Markerguru, Makani, Blue-Fox, Enolianslave, etc. There's only 1 or 2 for small fandoms, and maybe 10 at most for big fandoms...)

Re: Truth. You speak it.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
*nod nod* Exactly. Half the time, you're not a BNF unless you don't even have to say what story they did - almost everyone has a vague idea anyway.

LOL right there is a sign - I know who Enolianslave is, 'cause her artwork is asdfasf SO JEALOUS BUT YOU'RE SO AWESOME SO IT'S OKAY. (Which fandom do you know her from? I'm a Jaktard so that's my side of it.)

Re: Truth. You speak it.

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
FFFT I FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT AMAZING ARTISTS TOOOO.

I think she stalks me through fandom or something, since I've been into Jak, Transformers Animated, and now 9, all of which she's done art for. (WHAT, self that's not true!)

But yes, when I think BNF, if someone drops a name, I know exactly what fandom they're talking about.

Re: Truth. You speak it.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
YESSSS. ♥

I think she might! I mean, seriously, that's both scary and awesome at the same time. One thing I hate about a lot of my fandoms is that I feel like I joined the party late, so all the BNFs leave by the time I join in on the fun :[

Re: Truth. You speak it.

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
I understand the "Late to the party" feeling. It's like "HEY! I'M READY TO ENJOY THIS FANDOM, GUYS! Oh...you've all moved on? Okay...I'll just admire your stuff from back here."

(I think that's the reason I'm REALLY hoping that 9 develops a permanent fandom. I'm on time for once! Don't leave me behind, guys!)

Re: Truth. You speak it.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! My problem is that I've been a fan of, say, the Jak games since I was twelve, but I wasn't actually involved in any fandom beyond my sister and I geeking out over the games. Well, not until a few months ago. It's not nearly as active now as it was in, say, 2006 or 2007. So I see all these great fan fics or lovely fanart from back then and the artists saying, "Oh, I've stopped writing fiction for that fandom/stopped drawing art for that fandom" and I'm like, "NOOOO!" Same with System of a Down - I became a fan... only to discover that they'd gone on "indefinite hiatus" (which I take to mean "we're likely gonna break up but LAWL, then again we might not"). flm u_u

Random, but I noticed that 1) you're in Sarasota and 2) YOUR DA ACCOUNT HAS MY CHARACTER'S LAST NAME. ♥ (I'm working on an original story, and his name is Cain Delacroix. I thought the similarities were frighteningly awesome!) Tampa Bay nerds for the win! 8D

Re: Truth. You speak it.

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the time it's really hard to get into fandoms anyway, regardless of how in love you are with the source material. It feels like you need to get in early, when it first comes out, or else you're "late to the party," and people move on just when you've fallen in love with their stuff. D:

*noodly dance* Hell yeah I'm in Sarasota! (Actually, I'm here for art school, but I love Florida.) I saw you like King of Bandits: Jing, Titan A.E., and Eisbrecher! Obscure fandom high-five!

Delacroix? Yesssss. It was originally a reference to a character named Victor Delacroix from Chaos Legion, but now I've been finding tons of reasons that it's cool.

I tend to be more fluent in Sarcasm, though. ;D

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly - sometimes when people start talking about when they got into the fandom, they give you the evil eye if you state that you're new to the fandom. 'Cause, y'know, it's not like they were never new fans at one point or anything.

Fuck YEAH~! (Born a Floridian, but hell if I actually look one, as pale as I am.) Obscure fandom high-five right back at you! ♥ I mean, seriously, EISBRECHER FANS EXIST IN FLORIDA? It's a miracle! 8D

Yesss~. I don't remember how I came across the name, but I remember that after struggling to figure out a great last name for my character, "Delacroix" just fit for a multitude of reasons.

[identity profile] lost-variable.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Cool story, bro.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/zakai_/ 2009-10-07 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with a lot of what's been said already, but I'll just say what's on my mind and forgive me if it's already been said.

Putting aside the issue of being a BNF (as I tend to believe that most people who think they're BNFs are really only well known, not actual BNFs)...

Fandom should = fun. If it's not, you're doing it wrong. Make a seperate account and only bring your closest friends there. For serious. Then just put fandom stuff at that other account and friend everyone back then you won't feel like you're being a douche, and you won't feel like your life is out there for the world.

Or, you know, just don't friend other people back. No big deal. Not everyone automatically friends everyone. Keep your personal stuff locked and have all your fandom stuff public. Friend only the people you're interested in friending.

Also, as others have said, fandom isn't going to miss you if you go. Sorry, no offense meant, but it's the truth. So you won't be disappointing anyone. Fandom lives moment by moment. Here today, gone tomorrow. So yeah, if you gotta go for your own sanity, then go. Although, if you made good friends in the fandom, then you might want to hold on to them. Those people can last you long after your interest in the fandom is gone, and those are the people who will actually miss you when/if you go.

Another thought I had just now before I clicked 'post', if you're posting in communities, you could stop doing that and just post to your journal. Keep doing what you love, just stop pimping yourself out so much.

Anyway, I don't know if any of this was useful. I kinda hang out in the FMA fandom, so I just thought I'd try to give some advice to a fellow fan. ^_^

[identity profile] leadsprite.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Since I don't contribute to any fandoms, I can't sympathize on any sort of first-hand basis... but I can imagine that getting practically star-struck responses each time you try to interact with somebody would be annoying. Just try doing what some others have suggested, like getting a separate journal that has nothing to do with your fandom contributions, or laying low for a while.

I hope you find a way to get that toned down, so you can still enjoy fandom and meeting new people, without feeling all sorts of extra pressure. :/
