Um, but when Sam isn't in Dean's life, Dean is miserable. Castiel can't make Dean happy, as proven in 5.04 when five years passed and with women, Castiel, and leadership, Dean is an angry shell.

And I'm not promoting incest here, it's just canon fact.

I agree that Dean is miserable without Sam and that he was probably lying in 503. However, I'm preettttty sure that in 504 Dean's unhappiness was BECAUSE OF THE APOCALYPSE AND TOTAL FAIL THAT IS HIS LIFE more than Castiel not being able to make him happy.

Yeah, I don't think anything was gonna make Dean feel better about his brother turning into evil incarnate. There are just certain things in life that are hard to get over, yanno?

IA, happy + apocalypse does not mix. I was more that P!Dean saw all the crap and still stuck to his ideals and humanity. I think the point was that F!Dean couldn't without Sam but of course, YMMV.

Which is a ridiculous, artificial dichotomy that certain people are trying to enforce, that THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE for Dean. Have these people never heard of threesomes? :) But yeah, obviously family is hugely important for Dean, and any scenario where Sam isn't fulfilled and happy and still a part of his life isn't gonna square with Dean. (And Cas can be there to take care of the rest. ;)

Last episode Sam was renewed by hope (until Lucy fucked with his head). This episode Dean was renewed by free will, and saw F!Dean missed the point by thinking his mistake was not saying yes to Michael. Last season losing faith and trust in each other fucked up not only their relationship, but the world (YMMV). Now, Dean saw that continuing to 'be without Sam' in the sense that they leave things on bad terms, doesn't help either of them. Without a good relationship with Sam, together or away, Dean loses his humanity (in P!Dean's words, F!Dean is a dick). Without a good relationship with Dean, together or away, Sam loses his humanity (he said yes to Lucifer).

There's unhealthy together, which is how they used to be, and there's unhealthy apart, which is what P!Dean saw did to them. Instead of going between two extremes, he saw having a healthy together was the best option.

And this sums up the sane, neutral ground perfectly. Thank you for this :). As a multi-shipper (Dean/Sam AND Dean/Castiel :O) that nails exactly why I'm happy that future Castiel and Dean with possessed!Sam are not happy with each other, and why I'm happy Sam and Dean are making friends again, and why alongside both of these I'm ALSO happy Dean's got someone to treat as a non-familial friend (because Bobby is still basically a substitute dad/uncle for the boys) because really, having Castiel AND Sam is the healthiest way for Dean to go at the moment and this puts me in my happy place. :)

Yeah sure, they can keep each other human. Just saying that it doesn't mean that Castiel can't make Dean happy. If you mean that Castiel can't make Dean happy as long as Sam's not there (because he's busy being Lucifer's vessel and bringing the apocalypse), then it makes sense. Actually, in that situation probably no one could make Dean happy (or keep him human as it were).

I was talking about Sam/Dean - as in Sam slash Dean, together - in the secret. Why did you bring their canon relationship into it at all?

Um. Not in my experience? Having been in the fandom (shipping wincest) for two and a half years, I can't say I've seen many people who actually think an incestuous relationship is what TPTB are trying to show, here.

I think there's a break in what you think Sam & Dean and Sam/Dean's relationship is. Maybe it's just spite for Sam/Dean shippers, but to assume that it's different aside from the addition of sex is debatable. Most Sam/Dean shippers I've talked to consider that ship as a romantic extrapolation (fandom offshoot) of what's already there in Sam & Dean's foundation.

Seconding this. Just going off the canon, I think at this moment in time it's pretty obvious to anyone that not only is Sam still basically Dean's best friend (albeit one who's committed some serious screw-ups recently), but he's still HIS BROTHER. Hell, we've seen what losing John did to Dean, and that was when John was frequently an absent father. Dean and Sam have basically been joined at the hip on-off for years and Dean would not recover from Sam's loss easily, if at all, especially if - given Dean knows the beginnings of the apocalypse started on account of his breaking in Hell - he's going to be blaming himself for it and then swimming in denial for weeks/months/years.

Castiel's still to all intents and purposes a friend to Dean, and not a best one yet either - they've got the potential to be best friends but their relationship (and even as a Dean/Castiel shipper I happily admit this) is still in its beginning stages. Losing Sam would cock it up royally at this moment in time because at this moment in time Dean is still dependent on Sam whether he likes it or not, and they need to work on making their relationship healthier.

But that's my tl;dr tuppenceworth. I love Dean/Sam and I love Dean/Castiel but it's daft to think that at this moment in time losing Sam wouldn't change the progression of Dean/Castiel's relationship when Sam's still such an integral part of Dean's life :X.

Thiiiis. Dean even states it outright at the end of the ep (You're my brother, we're all we've got, etc.), in contrast to his distancing himself from Sam in the first couple episodes. I think by the time Sam called him in the beginning of 5.04, he was already healing and hurting because he was apart from Sam and he thought it was the only way to go at that point (in his mind). It's like back in Shadow, when he said John would be safer without them, then switching to Sam's side in Dead Man's Blood.

You make a good point about John and Sam and Dean's relationship to both. Without Sam, Dean doesn't really have much to stop him from spinning out of control, like we saw in 5.04 (and okay, while it was VERY LIKELY that future was fake cuz, let's face it, it was Zachariah that sent him there). Simply removing Sam from the equation is only fodder for his self loathing.

Tangentially, I don't necessarily think Dean could be stabilized by John as equally as Sam, either. Under John, Dean would always feel like he has to prove himself and would follow John's orders unconditionally. And Sam, similarly, was kind of a subordinate to Dean in the way only a little brother could be, but the way their relationship is shaping up to be now, they're becoming peers finally. Dean's going to have to give Sam space to rise up to an equal level, as he resisted Sam's proactive attitude in season 4 (imo he was uncomfortable with Sam making decisions for himself as much as he was uncomfortable with the decisions themselves).

With Castiel, I agree, Dean and he are still growing into each other. Castiel's only really been firmly on Dean's side since the last few minutes of Lucifer Rising, though before that, he'd been leaning further and further. He's been gaining a lot of trust with Dean lately, sure, and 5.04 is solidifying the foundations even more, but it's nowhere near his dependency on Sam.
