This does seem to happen more with same sex ships. But it also does happen with het ships too where the characters are friends in canon. And I get that it is nice to have just straight up friendships. But it is also nice to have friends who fall in love.

That being said, to each their own. If people prefer characters as friends, that's cool.

What about "I prefer them as friends," which is my go-to when someone else is pestering me to ship their ship when I don't.

Not OP but that's different imo. "You prefer them romantic partners, I prefer them as platonic friends" is acknowledging shipping or not shipping is up to the shipper/non-shipper. As opposed to acting like being friends is mutually exclusive to romance and vice versa.

Imagine if you were writing a platonic gen fic about two characters become a canon ship at the end of their series and someone was like "no, you can't do that, they're romantic and that's all they can be."

As someone who’s frequently in the “I prefer them as friends” camp, regardless of genders or sexualities…

Do you really think that people write characters’ dynamics the same when they’re platonic as when they’re romantic and/or sexual? In my experience, in both canon and fanfiction, it absolutely changes how the characters’ relationship is portrayed beyond “they’re just also fucking”.

That said, I know this gets leveled at queer ships a lot more than straight ships. So there’s something else going on there, though I think it’s a mess of things from straight-up homophobia to people simply assuming romance or sexual tension in male-female friendships.

And at the end of the day, people should ship as they like. My private disappointment at the comparative lack of platonic-focused fic is entirely my own.

As I've spent more time in fandom, whenever there's two characters that are canonically best friends but also would be very shippable, I go for the QPR route.

Prompto/Noctis from FFXV is a good example I feel. Sometimes best friends just need to kiss on the lips and touch each other inappropriately.

OP's bitch who should mind her own bitch headcanons.

how is this barrel-scraping going? you out yet?

Just pointing out-- not for this anon, who I don't assume is posting in good faith, but for others reading this-- that this is the opposite of the secret?? OP's complaint isn't 'some people out there don't ship what I ship waah', OP's complaint is 'when I am enjoying my headcanons with other headcanon-enjoyers, I see too many people dump on the fun instead of minding their own headcanons'.

So, like, if this had been a real comment, the lack of reading comprehension...
