Favorite Ship Dynamics
Re: Favorite Ship Dynamics
Also any sort of mentor/mentee dynamic, yandere adjacent themes (what can I say, possessiveness can be fun in a ship dynamic), and trauma-bonding-to-lovers (if that's a thing). Childhood best friends gets an honorable mention too, because that's just so sweet and fun a lot of the time.
Most of these ships, including my OC/Canon ones, will have at least one of these themes.
Re: Favorite Ship Dynamics
Similar, Grumpy/Sunshine pairings (McCoy/Kirk in AOS, Derek/Stiles).
And then just pairings with lots of angst between them that they overcome (Steve/Bucky, Bilbo/Thorin, Jaime/Brienne, Erik/Charles, Castiel/Dean).
Re: Favorite Ship Dynamics
I also like hero/villain ships. The dynamic of heroes and villains who both hate and are attracted to each other. There are different versions of this type of ship, and I like most of them as long as the author makes it work.
I like ships that switch up the usual dynamics. A boss and employee only the employee is the boss in the relationship. One character is clearly more powerful than the other but also clearly the other one is the one who has the power over them. A het ship where the woman is more physically powerful and/or has way more experience and/or is the boss of the other. A ship where the more submissive character has way more experience. That sort of thing.
I love friendship ships where the characters have been friends for a long time and end up falling in love slowly over time.
I like ships where one character is a bit prickly but the other one is the one who is their equal and talks back and gives as good as they get and challenges them. See: Worf/Jadzia.
I like cross-cultural/cross-species ships.
I like ships where both characters are awkward and learning this thing together.

And generally people who have a lot in common, especially if they don’t have those things in common with most others around them.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)Like for some faves that really do go all over: Thorin/Bilbo, Sam/Frodo, Vegeta/Bulma, Magnus/Alec, Xichen/Jinguangyao, Charles/Erik, and many many more.
Re: Favorite Ship Dynamics
Though, my thing is that I just ship my favorite character with everyone.

(Anonymous) 2025-05-02 12:56 am (UTC)(link)One of the grumpy/sunshine ships I'm feral over (thing with a friend rather than a big fan thing), the grumpy one is a good person! He has fair reasons to be sort of a grump and is a little isolated, but he has a solid moral center. The sunshine has set a lot of fires and explosions and is still working to wrap his head around the idea that murder is never the solution.
Re: Favorite Ship Dynamics
(Anonymous) 2025-05-01 03:22 am (UTC)(link)I adore a well balanced, trusting, and committed battle couple (Bucky/Nat)
I am absolutely feral for power difference pairings, especially where the partner with the position of relive power is the more devoted/affection/committed partner. (Mostly found in fanfic -_-)

(Anonymous) 2025-05-02 01:01 am (UTC)(link)I mean, grumpy/sunshine is always top tier, and can intersect with others-- a LOT of my ships have at least an aspect of this.
Best Friends to Lovers and Idiots to Lovers (one of my longest-loved ships could be both, with just a touch of being Star-Crossed, since the universe seems to be trying REALLY hard to kill one of them... and another of my favorite rarepairs is both, but with significantly less of the universe trying to kill anyone)
Saw a tumblr post t'other day about the dynamic between a character who's rooted to a fault and one who lacks any roots and realized that is one of my ships to a T.
And also just two people who are incredibly traumatized in ways that make them uniquely suited to understanding and supporting each other. It's catnip to me.
