Agreed. I'm not as big a fan of Qui-Gon, but people seem to forget Palpatine's role in all this. He's a freaking amazing villain, if he wanted Anakin to fall and be his apprentice, then that's it. Barely matters who his Master was.

Lucas has basically said so, that there are 2 reasons for Anakin's fall: he was found late, meaning he had all this baggage he had to struggle with, and then Palpatine's meddling. If even one of these had been different he could have made it.

Yup. People forget about Palpatine. There is no way Palpatine would have let Qui-Gon live if there had been even a hint of Qui-Gon figuring things out or slowing Palpatine's sway over Anakin. Yes, Palpatine is that good.

Yes - I think Palpatine's abuse of Anakin was the primary issue. The real difference, I think, could have been if the Jedi backed off the "attachments" thing and went and got Anakin's mother out of there, but even Qui-Gon couldn't be bothered, she was nothing to him.
