I wouldn't be surprised if it was nostalgia tinting the past a bit, but for me and compared to now - fandoms did feel better and a lot less toxic back in the day.

Then again, I was always really late to big fandoms after they 'peaked' so I usually ended up missing the worst drama. That and with my experience on LJ - I use to just go to the really niche communities seperated from the main fandom comm, such as specific ships or the CRACK comm which was 90% shitposting.
