A big part of Grimdark is its relentlessness. Everything is Grim And Dark all the time, without ever really letting up. By its very nature as a soap, Eastenders covers a much broader spectrum of emotions, themes, and scenarios.

Relentlessness is the perfect word to describe Grimdark. I've always thought of it as depressing, but I think that's more my reaction than a fitting description of the genre.

Relentlessness and also an overall lack of hope. Dark fiction can get brutal and have downer endings, but there's still a sense of hope and the idea that things can/will get better.

For example, Rogue One is dark and has a downer ending, but the ending is also one that has a great deal of hope because we know what the ultimate result of it is. So despite the fact that the majority of the main cast dies, it's not grimdark because their actions directly change the world for the better.
