Technically, it's to give more weight to his pacifism-vs-violence storyline, since it's mostly an internal struggle in the book.

They could have gone about that in so many other ways. Hell, all they'd have had to do is expand on his interactions with the Traveling People. The route they chose is lazy and obnoxious, as far as I'm concerned.
