(Anonymous) 2025-05-23 01:58 am (UTC)(link)I think it's a combination of "I can't connect with this," and, "I don't really want to connect with this." If the character is in the process of losing their faith (and they actually do lose their faith, and it's not framed as them being corrupted or whatever), then I can connect with that, despite never having had a drop of faith to lose myself, and I'm also a lot more open to making the effort to connect with it. But a character just being overtly religious does make me bounce off them a little bit, yeah.
I do still love some religious characters (e.g. Dana Scully is catholic and I love her immensely), but if I'm honest I kind of try to forget about the religious aspect of said characters as much as possible, and if the character has an episode where their faith is in the spotlight, it's always kind of like, "Oh no, it's one of those episodes." *braces to ride it out*
