The way I feel attraction is by proxy - i.e. I don't desire the characters, I desire that the characters desire each other. However, I actually do strongly prefer to find the characters I ship good-looking on at least a basic level. I think it's just part of the fantasy. I want them to look good for each other, basically. I also tend to find various forms of contrast hot when it comes to shipping dynamics, and I like to see that contrast reflected in the physical appearances of the characters whenever possible. (i.e. tall/short, rugged/effete, dark/light, older/younger, femme/masc, narrow/broad, sweet-faced/intimidating, carefully-put-together/woke-up-like-this, etc.)

The way this bears out for me in practice is that my brain latches onto a ship based on their dynamic, and then I make whatever mental tweaks I want to how I picture the characters in my mind. There's a definite limit to how much my mental image of a character can bend, though. Often I'll base my mental image of the character on a specific photo or screencap where the character/actor looks particularly in-line with how I like to imagine the character looking all the time.
