I think the secret is more bucking against the idea that because he's older, he must automatically be a bad player and is therefore without value.

As a player he is arguably not worth the money. He really should be on the coaching staff at this point because he does have a lot of knowledge to share. When clubs don’t transition player like him to their coaching staff it’s because they don’t think their experience and training style is worth the cost or a good fit with the rest of the coaches. As for leadership on the pitch: he isn’t the only player who can lead the team.
