(Anonymous) 2025-06-01 09:49 am (UTC)(link)I've heard a theory that this can stem from when humans had to hunt for food. Hunting takes a lot of physical work. Humans can kill big/fast animals because we have the endurance to keep pursuing our prey. We may not be able to run as fast as a deer but we can keep running for longer periods.
Because hunting takes a lot of physical strength and time, naturally humans may not want to sign up to be the hunters. In order to get ourselves to hunt, games and challenges were set up to determine who is the strongest and most capable of hunting. The emphasis on their physical skills gets them to feel pride and desire to hunt.
Humans have evolved to the point of not really needing to know or to encourage for the most physically capable individuals to show their skills to ensure we will survive, but we still found use for it. IMO for good and for not-so-good reasons.
Sports can bring/create communities together. But there are a lot of unhealthy beliefs about health correlating with physical strength.
