Cover letters need to hit certain keywords and phrases. Resumes should also all be tailored to the individual job posting - when I was applying for jobs, I just had a master CV of all my skills, and selected the ones that most applied for the job.

Everything should also have minimal eye-catching factors (unless you're in a creative field), use strong language, and should generally be written in terms of "I did X, which led to Y outcome".

Also, don't use AI; it's easy to tell when people use AI, and often gets you weeded out of applications. It's all a game of threading the needle of convincing the automated software you're not a bot, while not getting weeded out for being "too human" and missing the keywords it's looking for.
