Job searching

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-06-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm getting serious about applying for new jobs. But it has been a few years, and i don't know what the current trends are. Like what do they want in cover letters (for the ones that still want those)? How do you stand out?

All I know is that including your photo on your resume automatically gets it kicked out by the automated software.

Look for the jobs you want/listings and use those keywords in your resume and cover letter.

And I would also not use AI for cover letters, but I mean, if you do, edit it afterward and rewrite. People can tell.

And don't use em-dashes! Apparently AI fucking loves them, so now if you use one, people assume you didn't write it yourself.

Well, that's what you get for training AI on AO3, you fuckers! All my em-dashes, sucked into the vortex!

Cover letters need to hit certain keywords and phrases. Resumes should also all be tailored to the individual job posting - when I was applying for jobs, I just had a master CV of all my skills, and selected the ones that most applied for the job.

Everything should also have minimal eye-catching factors (unless you're in a creative field), use strong language, and should generally be written in terms of "I did X, which led to Y outcome".

Also, don't use AI; it's easy to tell when people use AI, and often gets you weeded out of applications. It's all a game of threading the needle of convincing the automated software you're not a bot, while not getting weeded out for being "too human" and missing the keywords it's looking for.

There are programs now where you can upload your resume and upload the job listing and it will tell you how likely you are to get through the software at the company. If you don't have enough keywords it goes straight into the bin before a person actually looks at it. Also, a lot of jobs these days don't actually exist; companies are advertising fake jobs to make it seem like they're either growing or taking their employees concerns about capacity seriously (but they're never gonna actually hire anyone).

ahhh *hug* job searching is a bitch. i'm sorry

I'm there too, quit my job on the last day of May.

I personally just make a resume to upload to the sites but... I am usually going for hourly retail . I uh.. never really got a college degree... (i did like college but we often had to move and the first time we had to move away. The second time i tried art college remote during the pandemic while I was in a bad state of mind and balancing work so that didn't pan out either.. which sucked.)

Don't include anything DEI related, the techbro algorithm kicks those out. Anything social justice related, especially if that is the main job role, gets nixed.

I tried to brace myself for a lot of rejection, and keep my spirits up, remembering that I am one of dozens or even hundreds of applicants. I also didn't try to put a ton of effort into every single application. Counterintuitive, but fussing over small details and putting lots of energy into every application means I can apply for fewer jobs and the rejections are more upsetting.

Obviously, check for any errors and make sure your resume gives a good impression, but don't obsess over getting it perfect or get into a mindset like you already work for the company. After a certain point extra effort is going nowhere, it's unnecessary to impress the hiring manager and draining to put yourself through.

I try to organize my resume so that the information is easy to understand at a glance, remembering the hiring managers are skimming many similar resumes. Simple, clear and gets my experience across right away. I do try to use keywords related to the job field/job listing, where appropriate.

I landed a new job a month ago, was rejected for several before that and had to keep motivating myself to try again, just doing a few applications a day until I heard back, doing interviews back to back, until I got my new job. Good luck!
