(Anonymous) 2025-06-08 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)I think part of it is just that certain kinds of bigotry feel more out of place in fantastical settings. Like, anti-black racism is very historically contingent in a way that xenophobia and classism aren't. And it's not like they can't do historical stories if they wanna talk about irl racism, so it does seem weird that it'd be written like that. IDK, just my thoughts.

Not that the people of that world aren’t awful… they are. I’m used to the Doctor getting furious at humanity’s selfishness or cruelty, but somehow this particular negative response made the character feel very young to me.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-09 04:18 am (UTC)(link)It reminded me of "Night of the Doctor," when a woman refused to board the TARDIS and let herself die because she hated the Time Lords and how their war with the Daleks was destroying the universe. The Doctor was so upset by Molly's, I think her name was, choice to crash with the ship they were on that he stayed and died with her. The ending of "Dot and Bubble" had a very similar outcome, reaffirming how much it hurts the Doctor not being able to save people. And the mindless reason he couldn't save those people was just salt on a very old wound.
