It's always a bummer when friends disappear the moment they get into a relationship, or the break up causes people to "pick sides" and the group splinters.

What gets me the most is when some people in the same group take turns cycling through dating the same person who caused multiple breakups and people leaving before, which they all witnessed.

What makes them all think they're the special one that will change them? Am I just surrounded by disaster lesbians?

I witnessed this with a group/team back in college, to the point that I would tell incoming freshman joining to make sure they date outside the team. When asked why, I would point to the distinct absence of my fellow upperclassmen.

Yikes, agreed though.

It used to hurt my feelings a lot when drama went down due to these sorts of situations, but these days when I see what's to come, I just let shit happen. Stay quiet and try to keep the group focused on fandom related things. Drop people who just turn everything into drama.

I understand a lot of that stuff are about other people and not about me, so I just try to keep my area clean and just endure all the shitstorms until they pass.

There was a book in my Catholic HS’s library that went into gory detail about the crucifixion. I think it was mostly torture porn for the people who claimed to that everyone should read it.

I refused to read it.

Between the production crew and actors, the whole torture-porn nature of it, and the strange pseudo-worship people make out of the movie watching experience, The Passion of the Christ misses the entire point by a country mile. I still can't believe it's getting a sequel.

evangeical circles in the 90s were all about how the "mainstream" denominations never went into detail about the torture, like gosh don't you people understand what he went through?? it was terrible! you should feel bad about how terrible it was! so even though I was edging my way out of that bubble when Passion of the Christ came out, I still got why it was made to be that way. it was "you don't understaaaaaand!!" taken to its extreme level.

but now on the outside as an atheist, it's just so dumb. I get it if you don't want to deal with the gore, OP, a lot of people don't actually need it visually spelled out for them to get it. but if anyone judges you for that, say what I just said: you get it, you don't need the visuals to get it. I feel the same about any depiction of any of the millions of horrible things that human beings have done to each other in the last 10 thousand years. I don't need to see it to get how awful it was; I've never watched Schindller's List because I get it, I know how awful it was, and I don't want it to happen again.

Anyone harassing you for not watching the Passion of Christ seems absurd to me. I'm an atheist, I watched it by chance in a university class on violence in cinema, and our professor opened the discussion with "So! Wailing on Jesus, the film ..."

A few students were revolted by how gorey it was, a couple thought Gibson did a good job acting (but that it was an incredibly self-indulgent role - martyr fantasy porn writ large), but I don't think we had a single person in there who felt one iota more like a Christian because they watched it. Just passing that along in case it's helpful, nonny.

I think part of it is just that certain kinds of bigotry feel more out of place in fantastical settings. Like, anti-black racism is very historically contingent in a way that xenophobia and classism aren't. And it's not like they can't do historical stories if they wanna talk about irl racism, so it does seem weird that it'd be written like that. IDK, just my thoughts.
