I usually see the word “yandere” used for characters who’re homicidally possessive. I think there’s a comedy manga where one is really incompetent and keeps falling into her own traps.

I'd love to know the name of the manga if you remember it, that sounds hilarious.

Homicidally possessive? I kept seeing it applied to girls like Sakura from Naruto, who have a huge crush on a particular boy, that everyone knows about, and are willing to be awful to other girls to try to ensure he won't end up with someone else. And they don't tend to get the guy they're hot for to want them back, even though they're usually drawn as straightforwardly attractive. I've seen more extreme versions of it, but IMO, most anime girls called Yandere are just given to throwing tantrums over this one, particular thing. In a fairly feminine, screaming-and-flailing way.

Or just hotheaded tomboys, like Misty from Poke'mon.

Translation?

I feel like I should understand this secret but it's not making sense in my brain for some reason.

I agree, this was strangely confusing.

After staring at the secret for a while, I think OP is saying that they wish there were more fics with yandere characters who were moderate in their...yandere-ness? Like, not psycho and rapey, but also not totally toothless and healthy??

It seems like a big part of what they find too extreme about most yanderes is that they're too rapey. I think OP is saying that they can't avoid the rapiness by just opting for gen fics with obsessive dynamics, because gen fics with obsessive dynamics are too thin on the ground to be a satisfying source of obsessive but not wildly rapey yanderes.

If this is what OP is saying, then...I mean yeah, actually, I kind of agree. I mean, I've never been into any anime/manga fandoms, so I can't claim to fully understand the yandere trope. But I do love me an "obsessive and kinda fucked up, but not at all rapey and they do actually love each other" kind of ship dynamic. And because those dynamics are complicated and involve a lot of nuance and development, they don't get written as much as I personally wish they did. Fluffy or full-on dark are just easier modes to write in, for the most part.

Listening to my friend yap about her Japanese yandere light novels made me see how weird the western perception of the genre is.

Re: the LADS meme: I wished so bad that Zayne ( or Sylus) would take MC away from Caleb through the entire "Home coming wings" chapters. That boy isn't right in the head. I mean I kinda get why he is like that, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

TBH Who is right in the head in the game? Xavier is jealous of himself, Zayne is colder than his evo, Sylus get easily jealous to the point he felt intimidated by a mannequin and Rafayel... is Rafayel. Caleb isn't right in the head but no one seems to be a safe option for MC.

I thought 'vanilla' was the outlier in the yandere genre, like, my first association would be School Days, Yuno Gasai or very one sided 'waifu/husbando kills you or keeps you as a sex slave' type of content, including Bad End fics. If I see the yandere tag, I am expecting a whole host of potential squicks from the outset and have to do my research to make sure it's the kind I want to see. I also enjoy less extreme yandere stuff, or two characters who are equally crazy about each other. Like, I think Luo Binghe is the sweet spot.

Loyalty also > possessiveness for me. I prefer my yanderes to be so secure in the knowledge no one else could ever interest their LI that they wouldn't get randomly jealous. Either that or an inferiority complex where they don't consider themself worthy of them.
