Fandom is harder to enjoy than it was 15+ years ago.

I'll bite! Disagree. It's about the same imo, you gotta curate your experience, but you did back then too. There have always been shitty people in fandom, I don't think it's really changed that much since 2010.

It was very rare to nonexistant to accuse people of being bigots solely over what they shipped or which characters they liked back then.

You still ran into a few though. At least, I ran into some folks who considered themselves woke (or whatever term we were using back then) because they liked a gay ship, and accused people of being homophobic if they didn't like that exact ship.

Disagree. Het shippers were constantly accused of homophobia.

Oh anon people did this back then, it just didn't gain quite the same traction that itt does now.

I've been in fandom since the 90s and I can confirm there were shitty people and cliques and all of that back then too.

For me, AO3 is a huge, huge plus for the overall enjoyability of fandom, and it was in its infancy 15 years ago, and didn't officially exist 16 years ago. So that's one massive point in the 'disagree' column for me.

But other than AO3, I find basically everything else worse, now, so...ehhh? *hand wobble*

The sad thing is, I actually do like tumblr as a fandom platform. I just wish it hadn't taken over as THE fandom platform. In a universe where Tumblr AND Dreamwidth (or a journaling site with a very similar functionality model) became dual fandom hubs, and most people were fannishly active on both, I think I would enjoy fandom a lot more than I currently do.

(also I miss vidding fandom, and the way fanvids used to be)
