State a broad opinion you think everyone in FS will agree with, if you can think of one.

Gotta be a broad opinion tho. A definitely verifiable statement e.g. 'I am currently anon' or 'it is a fact that I, the OP, enjoy science fiction' doesn't count.

It seems like a pretty soft general opinion, right? But no. There are so many people that think "censorship is bad" until it hits one of their trigger topics, then you have to have the talk about no, just because you are offended by it doesn't mean people shouldn't be allowed to talk about it.

I'll bite! Disagree. It's about the same imo, you gotta curate your experience, but you did back then too. There have always been shitty people in fandom, I don't think it's really changed that much since 2010.

For me, AO3 is a huge, huge plus for the overall enjoyability of fandom, and it was in its infancy 15 years ago, and didn't officially exist 16 years ago. So that's one massive point in the 'disagree' column for me.

But other than AO3, I find basically everything else worse, now, so...ehhh? *hand wobble*

The sad thing is, I actually do like tumblr as a fandom platform. I just wish it hadn't taken over as THE fandom platform. In a universe where Tumblr AND Dreamwidth (or a journaling site with a very similar functionality model) became dual fandom hubs, and most people were fannishly active on both, I think I would enjoy fandom a lot more than I currently do.

(also I miss vidding fandom, and the way fanvids used to be)

One the one hand, I def agree that most of us are better off if we don't take a lot of what goes on in fandom too seriously. OTOH, this feels like too broad of a generalization to me, and I'm not really comfortable telling other people what they should and shouldn't take seriously.

And on the OTHER other hand, I think if someone spends hundreds of hours putting their whole fanussy into writing a longfic, it's extremely reasonable, and maybe even inevitable, that they're going to take the endeavor kind of seriously.

Nothing that is necessary for humans to live should cost money.

What is controversial is me thinking this is an uncontroversial opinion. The reason it makes people mad when it gets said aloud isn't because anyone disagrees, it's because it's a pointless statement as it is never going to be a reality and the only reason anyone would bother to say it is to attention-seek by pretending to make a bold statement.
