The Diddy Trial

Trials are technically politics and i need to vent so

I am following the Rotten Mango coverage of the Diddy trial and just the defense lawyers are pissing me off in how they're doing things.

Yes I understand their job is important and everyone deserves a fair trial and they should do their jobs well. But it's not even like "they're doing it tool well"

it's that so many cross examinations by the defense to people victimized by Diddy are just...them purposefully not understanding how abuse cycles and trauma and all that works. The most recent one of Brian Steele cross examining Mia was the most blatant and he even repeatedly re-asked a question after it was overruled. And then the defense keeps crying mistrial bc the prosecution is breaking rules. That's RICH.

the whole thing with bringing up all her social media posts and being aggressively like "if you were REALLY abused why would you post this... and this... and this"

I honestly wish the prosecution would call an expert psychologist on trauma and abuse cycles to shut this shit down.

I mean i'm sure there are better ways the defense could make their case without repeatedly beating the "why didn't you leave him" drum.

And what worries me is that understanding of mental health issues is so bad sometimes in this country that the defense could be swaying the jurors who don't understand how this shit works either.

I haven't been following the trial because it'd probably be bad for my blood pressure, but... yeah, sounds about right. Defense lawyers engage in some truly despicable tactics to get their client off, and in a trial like this I'd expect a LOT of victim-blaming and slut-shaming in an effort to discredit the witnesses. Because chances are, there's more than one juror who thinks yeah, if Diddy was so bad, why did you stay with him, blah blah blah gold digger blah blah.

That's exactly how the OJ Simpson trial went.

It's so disheartening.

there's a difference between reasonably defending your client because it's your job.. and just full on... drinking his kool aid, buying his bullshit.

I feel so bad for the victims, Cassie,, Mia.. Jane. I hope they can have peace going foreword.

And I just really hope society can learn to have better understanding of things like mental illnesses and the signs of abuse and how trauma effects people so we can help victims instead of judging them.

I think the defense team probably does actually understand it, believes that the jury does not, and is using the misconceptions surrounding abuse (if it was really abuse, they would have left/ceased contact/said something about it before now) to their advantage.

And really, in this type of trial, where it's a lot of witness testimony, the defense needs to discredit the witnesses and well, getting the jury to believe that it wasn't really abuse or was exaggerated opens that door. If the witnesses are shown to be unreliable, then the case falls apart. If the defense gets the jury to believe that everyone was there voluntarily and willingly participated in everything, then the sex trafficking didn't happen, the prostitution didn't happen, and the related racketeering conspiracy didn't happen.

Yeah..
Still idk what big win Steele thought he was making re Mia's social media. but. personally i feel like to a rational person it was fairly obvious why she wasn't posting on instagram and social media about all the horrible things this this rich man who was her boss was doing.... it's like "you were mad at your boss for keeping you late right? so why didn't post about what a shit head he is on facebook/linkedin or whatever"

"Sir, I enjoy being able to maintain a JOB and make a livelihood"

I can't follow this trial closely (like any high profile case with DA, DV and SA), but I'm not surprised to hear the defense's angle.

It's classic DARVO.

Usually starts out with "well if it was that bad why did you stay/come back?"
Willful ignorance that when someone has power over another, their choices are limited and they have been made to believe that they have to protect their abuser or put their abuser before themselves.

its depressing really but i guess it makes sense that some lawyers will use those techniques when defending an abuser.
