Dream Vacation

If you could pick an all expenses paid 1 week trip to anywhere, where would you go? What would you do there?

I've been wanting to go to Japan since grade 5 and it's so expensive so I'd take the opportunity to fulfil a lifelong dream (I'm now 39).

I've always wanted to go to Japan but then I realize I don't like fish. So I feel like food would be limited for me.

I wish India wasn't so dangerous for women because that'd a food paradise.

Japanese food is so much more than fish. If it's just a dislike of fish-flesh and you're fine with seafood flavors hidden in condiments or broths, instead of an allergy, you can get by just fine. Maybe you won't get to enjoy sashimi or takoyaki, but you can still have katsudon, tempura, soba/udon, teppanyaki, hot pot/shabu shabu, karaage, yakitori, kushikatsu, like 95% of all types of ramen, onigiri, and all the sweets and dango and street food and...god, just so, so much. Pork, chicken, and beef make up much more of the Japanese palate now, and avoiding fish as an ingredient is super easy. About the only thing you couldn't do would be the kind of kaiseki meal served at a ryokan, because it's super super rude to ask for a substitution for all fish dishes unless you have a legit allergy that would kill you. They do their best to accommodate food allergies but avoiding fish as a whole would mean you'd be best off just not staying at a ryokan or not buying the meal package.

But but but...omg. You can eat so much food in Japan without ever taking a whiff of raw fish.

Seconded re: there being plenty of options besides fish. Seafood is certainly a big part of Japanese cuisine, but there are traditional dishes which feature beef, pork and chicken as well. You won't have any trouble finding stuff to eat.

Plane tickets, yes, holy crap. But once inside Japan, it's not that expensive! When I booked hotels I found plenty that were the equivalent of $60US or less per night, and none of them were crappy. If you're solo traveling or have only 2 people total, a lot of low-cost options open up for you. You can eat like a king on 500-700Y full set meals and the konbini scene is no joke - cheap breakfast, snacks, and drinks anytime anywhere and they taste great. Japan is only expensive if your goal is to eat only Michelin starred food and shop at luxury goods stores.

I did 18 days on the ground for about 5K and more than half of that was the plane ticket. A week, if you're solo and plan enough in advance to get good hotel deals? Saving up to swing that is far more doable than you'd think.

Absolutely. I've been to Japan twice and I'm planning a third trip for this year and the plane tickets are always the most expensive part. Food is cheap, hotels are cheap, and if you get a JR pass then traveling around is cheap too.

Antarctica. I'd like to go to the Dry Valleys, and to the farthest-south Emperor and Adelie colonies, and to the Trans-Antarctic Mountains, and spend a few days exploring the Peninsula, and see Mts Erebus and Terror. Not bothered about going to the Pole.

around the world, except for any country where there's a war going on. And Antarctica.

New Zealand! I would go hiking and explore and bask in the New Zealand of it all.

New Zealand is my pick, too. So many places that would be so cool to see. Plus, I'm a fan of the Finn Brothers, so that's another reason for my interest :D.

New Zealand is my second choice. I would love to go there someday. Not just for the nerdy joy but because it is genuinely beautiful.

New Zealand is gorgeous. Mountains, grasslands, the coast, temperate rainforest, it really does have everything and the people are so gosh darn NICE and laid back.

Same! Also like what someone else said, not just for the nerdy aspect but I want to enjoy the landscape. Looks like a beautiful place!

I've been planning a vacation for Berlin-Vienna-Prague for years now so probably that one. One day, one day.

Italy/Greece. My college does these trips where the professors take alumns on tours of all the sites they taught in their classes and they always do the Italy and Greece tours back to back so that you can just seamlessly go on both. I might be cheating a bit since each tour is a week, but I've always wanted to go.

Japan is a dream vacation spot for me. If my partner and I had the money when we get married we would love to visit for Tokyo Disneyland and general sightseeing.

Hawaii. I would spend most of the time on the beach, but part of the time exploring one or more of the volcanoes. Honestly, Hawaii is my dream trip. I love swimming, and I've been into volcanoes since I was a kid.

Only a week? Probably Ireland, I think I can see all I want to see in a week. Historical stuff - castles/ruins, ancient megaliths, that sort of thing. I'd like to spend at least a day somewhere with a Gaelic-language revival whether a class, a club, whatever, because I studied Irish Gaelic in college and I want to see how the language preservation is going 30 years later.

I am glad I am not the only one who thinks that 1 week is way too little time

For real sightseeing, it is definitely too short. But for just relaxing and a little sightseeing, it is probably fine in my opinion. I'd pick somewhere smaller with less things to do, just a few specific ones I want to see, rather than a whole big place with a lot of things I want to do.

Italy, I think. Major foodie tour, plus staying in some beautiful villa in a coastal town or hill town sounds heavenly.

I was writing a lot of words, but it basically boils down to "every country that has colder weathers at least for a couple of months". Can't stand heat at all
