How does someone queer and disabled continue to have hope in all of this? I'm scared. I legit... Don't know what to do anymore. It doesn't seem like it's going to get better, and it'll get more dangerous for me and my partner.

The demagogue will die.

He is the only thing keeping the entire vile machine running, and odds are that 25% that he dies within his presidency. Without him, every sycophant and fascist that has bent the knee for him won't know what to do, and turn on each other. That is why dictatorships are a terrible government system: Nevermind the cruelty, but the fact a dictator never wants a successor, let alone rivals to power from within, and the fact an unhappy populace is still one they have to obey.

Besides, he is losing within the courts. People say he's supposedly disobeying them, but he's been ultimately forced to obey them at each turn. And even he has to obey money and power, and fascism is ultimately terrible for business. Hence his new title, TACO.

There will be suffering, but the solace I have in all of this shit is the fact it is not sustainable for even the people that gave rise to it.

I can't say these are good times, and I pray for your safety and prompt movement to safer areas. But you will live longer than that fucker will. With any hope, if he's not even turned paralytic by his age and terrible lifestyle, the devil is going to have a hell of a time with him in a shorter time than most people think.

Live to spite him, nonnie. All in all, please be safe.

By staying off the internet as much as possible, really. Limit your online time and spend more time outside in the fresh air and in the company of flesh and blood people, and do something with them. The internet can really mess you up if that is where you get your primary source of interaction or of news.

It is never as bad as the internet makes it out to be.

Unfortunately I'm in an area being hit with poor air quality because of the Canadian wildfires. Going outside currently isn't an option. My lungs are sensitive.

But uh, it's def bad, my guy. People are being trampled at protests. There's police brutality. I know you're probably white and Conservative and the news is hiding what's going on, but dude. Seriously?

nayrt but ayrt has a point. Yes, bad things happen in places, but in some ways are being exaggerated. Why? Bad shit sells. Bad shit is profitable. Police brutality existing doesn't mean it's happening everywhere at this moment. Of course the THREAT is there, of course being of certain groups might mean you're treated differently. It helps to be discerning about the content you're consuming. There are plenty of doomers and folks who just want to see the world burn and gain something from having everyone else scared or behaving in a way that hurts the movement.

Besides, keep in mind there is a limit to what you can do, and consuming doomerist news often only gives the illusion of helping, when all it is doing is wrecking your mental health. Despair and doomerism is what the fascists want.

It is good to stay informed, but put a limit on how long do you take in the news, be selective on the news you take in (focus on objective ones, and even good news to know the cracks behind the facade of the fascists), and ensure there are actions you can do to help. Donating to groups opposing this shit, going to protests, that sort of stuff.

I'm three of the demographics they're targeting (my wife is in two) and what I do is make sure I'm prepared to manage on my own for a week or two and I absolutely do not look at the news. News that filters through my usual haunts (like tumblr or my fandom specific subreddits), fine, but I don't seek it out. I support the people who go to the protests I can't (I make protest posters and educate in protest safety).

I made it through Bush, my elders made it through Reagan, and I'll make it through the current asshole and the next one that will inevitably come in the future. Looking at queer and disabled history has shown we're resilient.

Taking a break from the news, social media, and focusing on my own wellness and hobbies helps too. Reach out to friends and (non-shitty) family.

Perspective. Not doomscrolling. Changing your sources of news. Not listening to doomers. Doing things you enjoy. Connecting with your local resistance groups and seeing if there is some way you can help, even in the background. I know it's easier said than done. Personally, I have trouble getting past my own resentment of folks at times. But the truth is, this is one of those "in for the long haul" things and not a "one and done" thing. It took us a long time to get here and it's going to take a while to get out, so we all will need to buckle up. The good thing is, the more people wake up to this thing and join the resistance, the faster it will topple.

I'll end this post on something of a funny note. Trump's birthday parade takes place on Saturday. Friday night in DC? It's going to rain. Saturday morning? The sun will barely peek out before noon before it starts raining again in the early afternoon, continuing into the night. While everybody else is having their No King's Day protests around the country, it is literally going to rain on Trump's parade.

I know for some weather is not a big deal but this man's ego is so fragile, it might push him over the edge.

I try to make sure I'm focusing on daily life, my hobbies and responsibilities, emotional wellbeing (good and bad feelings getting their turn), self care, making sure things are in order financially to the best of my abilities. It's easy to get immobilized with anxiety, but no matter what happens, you will still be thankful you took care of your daily life and your body will appreciate it. If stuff keeps getting worse for awhile, it will help you be in a better position to weather the situation.

Take joy where you can, you being sad and worried all the time does nothing to help anyone, it's okay to relax and laugh when you are able to. Don't totally ignore the news but don't obsess over it and set limits that work for you, like 15 min of news a day or just catch up on big headlines or something.
