I think this is less about nerds taking this fandom seriously, than a too-large segment of nerds taking EVERY fandom too seriously, no matter how ridiculous and no matter how much it tries to make fun of itself... and this one being no exception

1) Some people take everything too seriously
2) Taking the Silly Seriously is Seriously Silly and fun (WAAAAAGH!)
3) We live in a world where millions of people people have suffered horribly and died for rubber, for shiny rocks, for flamable dinosaur goo, and/or for the pride of deeply stupid men. So feeling pathos for the poor fucks stuck on the ground level of the Scrunchi Crusade is part of being human.
4) Those plastic minis are both *super* expensive and *super* time consuming so lore/rules changes can be a punch in the gut, wallet, and free time all at once.

I swear it's the books!

I picked up the books expecting a lot of tongue-in-cheekiness, but some are surprisingly well-written. Poetic, even. And don't get me started on the audiobooks. The narrators sell the shit out of them.

I'm not sure if the books are playing up to how seriously 40K fans take the universe, or if the fans take 40K so seriously as a result of the books. I was a fan of the video games and didn't get into the books until there were a million of them, so I was late to the party and don't know which is the chicken or the egg.

Honestly I HATE The Light in the Piazza-- I'm a huge musical guy and while there ARE some new musicals I've enjoyed, I do admittedly tend to prefer old ones. But The Light in the Piazza's music was so bland and I couldn't connect to it emotionally at all. It doesn't fill me with rage or anything, most of the time I just forget that it exists, but whenever I am reminded of it I do just remember how much I hated it.

I'd recommend trying different musicals-- there are a lot of different styles over the course of musical theatre history and I do think you'll find something you click with out there! But yeah, you're def not the only person who found this one wildly overrated.

Been a fan of musicals my whole life and am willing to go on record that "The Light in the Piazza" is wildly overrated. (I'm not wild about a lot of modern musicals, though. I grew up on Rogers & Hammerstein, Kander & Ebb, and a little bit of Sondheim (not any deep cuts), so take my opinion with a grain of salt.)

I've never even heard of this one, so I guess it hasn't gained enough fame or notoriety to cross into the classical music circles I'm in. Which usually means it's either very uninteresting or super small-scale (like something made specifically for high school or church drama groups). *shrug*

I don’t know this one but modern musicals aren’t to my taste. I’ve seen most and the music feels…off, I guess? I can’t think of any other word for it. It always feels like they’re trying to copy the greats of yesteryear and falling short. When combined with the advances in every other aspect of stage musicals, it’s terrible.

I love the first movie, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a book accurate series. I like that the books referenced the movie and book Mia was shocked that they made her grandmother nice. The later books got really messy though and then very odd with Mia’s surprise half-sister that just randomly appeared out of nowhere.

I feel like I went through a similar phase with many of my fandoms. I'm not enjoying the show/game/etc anymore but I don't want to lose the fandom or lose touch with the community. And as I get older and find it harder to connect with fandom spaces I feel exactly as you described more and more.

I understand your feelings. And I also have a lot of conflicting thoughts about this author's explanation for moving their fic to Patreon. By "translating without my permission," did they mean that people were translating the work, and then claiming credit for the work itself; or did they mean that people were translating the work, and then crediting the author? If it's the latter, then that isn't plagiarism. If it's the former, then I understand the author being upset, but I also feel as if fic exists in a very weird space where "plagiarism" is more of a social breech than anything else. Whenever we write fic, we aren't necessarily plagiarizing, but we are borrowing from other peoples' work in a legally murky way. And on top of that, fandom is at its best when it's a collaborative labor of love, rather than yet another transactional space governed by the logic and incentives of the market. So, despite having written my fair share of fic, I can't get myself to feel quite as incensed about plagiarism in that area as I would in others.

But at the end of the day, I suspect their explanation was bullshit, and that they were primarily motivated by the prospect of a payroll. Guessing you've suspected the same.

Sometimes I read a comment or a secret about people's experience at FS and it is like they are describing a whole different comm.

Like yeah, sometimes (often) people will nitpick a secret or take (what feels like) a really negative bad faith take, but more often I see people agreeing or sharing similar felings or stories.

Like those anons a bit ago that said the comm is full of hate and peole who just want to attack and argue. I see that some days but mostly I am just here chatting with other anons and occasionally named users (bless you named users, I keep saying I should get an account just for this comm bit alas, I am lazy).

How does someone queer and disabled continue to have hope in all of this? I'm scared. I legit... Don't know what to do anymore. It doesn't seem like it's going to get better, and it'll get more dangerous for me and my partner.
