I swear it's the books!

I picked up the books expecting a lot of tongue-in-cheekiness, but some are surprisingly well-written. Poetic, even. And don't get me started on the audiobooks. The narrators sell the shit out of them.

I'm not sure if the books are playing up to how seriously 40K fans take the universe, or if the fans take 40K so seriously as a result of the books. I was a fan of the video games and didn't get into the books until there were a million of them, so I was late to the party and don't know which is the chicken or the egg.

It's got to be the books. I remember Warhammer gamers from the 90s (mostly to avoid them) and they were all deadly serious dudebro gamers and 95% of them were awful people, even for a 90s roleplaying convention. But the books came later and now there's this incredibly fun group of fans.

This makes me want to check out the books.
