This is one of those areas in which I think if the money doesn't go directly to JKR and it doesn't keep romanticizing how "good" the HP lore is, there shouldn't be any scandal or finger waving.

I try my best not to engage on HP stuff, mostly because the entire fandom and existence makes me uncomfortable, but I still recognize the influence the series had on me. I know that we don't just simply drop a fandom and pretend it no longer exists or that anything relating to it is instantly bad.

-it doesn't keep romanticizing how "good" the HP lore is-

Is that unacceptable now, too? LOLLL that's just batshit levels of moral policing. That is truly, hilariously insane.

DA

I think what anon meant was in the realm of acting as promoters or free advertising or direct encouragement to buy stuff, which gels with the stance of not wanting to give JKR money. Not like wistfully looking back at HP fandom or fics or something.

At least that's how I read it.

OK but what's the acceptable line between fannish excitement and free advertising? Like, what if I reread the books and make posts about how great I think they are? Does that make me a deplorable?

Not that I would do that because it would be the equivalent of wearing a "kick me" sign, and also fandom successfully made me hate HP and IDEK where my books are anymore.

No idea, I'm not the original poster, and I agree the middle ground is unclear. There probably is a far end where people host like, officially licensed/HP themed gatherings with merch and stuff where it isn't murky at all though.

Ah, gotcha.

I own the Harry Potter books from when I was a kid and I still take them out sometimes because they are fun to read.

How's that? Still too much? Would it be better or worse if I mentioned that I'm trans?

Great secret.

I still enjoy HP fic, too. But I never, ever engage in the fandom or talk to anyone about HP because I don't wanna be dragged into JKR wank.

I hate that just reading fic, even ancient fic, even meme fic, ends with people getting dragged into JKR wank.

Like, I get it. I do. But reading and/or writing fanfic doesn't benefit the bitch in any way, and a lot of people these days like to read and/or write fic instead of consuming whatever cash-grab bullshit she's churning out these days to fund her hatred, so... can we just let people read and write fic in peace? Please?

I wish people understood death of the author so we can all enjoy Harry potter fanfiction without being like jkr etc
