Artificial sweeteners - monkfruit and allulose.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-14 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Normally I dislike the flavor of a lot of artificial sweeteners... it's too saccharine, or leaves a weird chemical aftertaste and it's very, very obviously not plain sugar. I cannot abide Diet Coke for this reason.

But recently I tried monkfruit (with erythritol) and allulose and they're not bad. I can still tell it's not sugar, but any weird flavors or aftertaste is far less than other types of artificial sweetener I've tried before. I'll consume it in moderation, of course, but it's been nice finding something that doesn't taste terrible.

I am curious why you don't just eat sugar? Is it a dietary thing?

Family history of type 2 diabetes, and my a1c tests on the borderline for a diagnosis. Bit of an odd question though, because cutting down/avoiding sugar is a pretty common dietary choice these days.

AYRT - Just because you see it as a common thing doesn't mean everyone does it for the same reason. I was just curious.

Er, it's not just me seeing as a common thing. It is really common.

Are you in the U.S.? Diabetes is a big issue here. Most people who are trying to lower their sugar intake are doing it for dietary reasons. It's extremely common. Entire fad diets are built around this and have been for decades. Other reasons are possible, of course, but I can't really think of many off the top of my head. Uh... they like the taste of artificial sweeteners? Seems unlikely, lol.

da but that's actually why I drink diet sodas rather than regular ones. I just don't like the nasty syrupy aftertaste of regular soda or how cloyingly sweet it tastes. Diet soda doesn't have the syrupy aftertaste and it doesn't taste as sugary sweet to me, so that's why I drink it.

That's funny, because diet soda has a very syrupy aftertaste to me. I mean, regular soda does too because of the sugar (or more likely high fructose corn syrup) but like another anon upthread, I can detect an off flavor in most artificial sweeteners that's slightly reminiscent of cough syrup or something unpleasant. So I just avoid soda altogether.
