Seems like you are drawn to toxic ships if this keeps happening. I generally have to seek out toxic ships if I want them.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-15 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you looking at toxic ships or soft ones OP? Because I have plenty of soft ships and cute, vanilla stuff is like 90% of the fic/art with a bit of toxic stuff because people want that sometimes too. If anything I have a harder time finding toxic stuff for my toxic ships because people want to uwu-fy those more for some reason.

Makes me wonder what you ship.

if your pairing or even fandom is nothing but wall to wall toxic ships, it's probably baked into the premise.

I'm wondering what your definition of 'toxic' is here.

Things you don't like and/or aren't comfortable reading =/= toxic.
Things that aren't completely pure and lacking in conflict =/= toxic.
Things that are messy and complicated and uncomfortable =/= toxic.

Uh, there's a whole range between toxic and vanilla, OP. There is lots of stuff that isn't considered vanilla that also isn't toxic.

I'm sorry OP and I wish you the best in finding what you want, HOWEVER. IME even ships that are canonically deeply toxic have tons of saccharine fluff. I kinda have to wonder if you're like, trying to find vanilla fic exclusively for extremely fucked up relationships or something for this to happen.

I'm kind of confused. I thought "vanilla" meant not kinky, not non-toxic.

1. I am pretty sure you are using 'vanilla' wrong. It is generally used for people who don't like kink.

2. I feel you. There was one fandom I was in that I really loved the main pairing but when I went to look for fic it was all 'enemies to lovers' or weird toxic dark fic. It was baffling as it was frustrating.

As long as they're tagged. The worst is someone who thinks they're writing a loving non-toxic relationship but it's actually toxic AF.

Personally speaking, I need a little conflict in my ships for them to be interesting. If they're just sweet and fluffy and happy all the time, that's boring to me.

But vanilla doesn't mean the ship is devoid of toxicity...

Vanilla from my understanding means that the sexual encounters will be gentle and more in line with "normal" sex.
Often it means less talking, traditional top/bottom positions, and not a lot of position or scene changing.

You can have a toxic relationship in which the sex is vanilla.
Also, I think some fandomers need to learn to discern the differences in general relationship dynamics/terms in fanfics vs BDSM terms.
BDSM terms can often have more than one distinct action/purpose.

Like, not all subs are into shame kinks. Just because you see someone coined as a sub doesn't mean all you'll get is a sub crying and moaning at degradation.

I don't know what Secret OP's preferences/expectations are for vanilla sex, but I would hope they don't use "vanilla" as an umbrella term for "fluff fics".

Because again, you can have vanilla sex and still be in a toxic relationship.

You're completely right. "Fluff" or "Wholesome" would be way better opposites for toxic. The opposite for vanilla is just kinky.

And not only can a vanilla relationship be super toxic, a kinky relationship can be super sweet and fluffy! If OP is some kind of puriteen who thinks spanking or handcuffs are 'toxic' even in a story centered around trust, caring, and pleasure, just because it's not 'vanilla', then yeah I just bet they're having a hard time.
