I loved that film too, and cried at the end. And then - I reveal this under anonymity, when "inspired by the works of Stefan Zweig" rolled up I said, out loud, in the theatre, "oh, of course!" and cried a bit more.

Which is to say, OP, if you haven't already, do treat yourself to some Stefan Zweig. I am particularly fond of the Post Office Girl, Beware of Pity and his autobiography, The World of Yesterday.
