I grew up before the internet. I was intensely fannish about some stuff but all the normies around me thought that was weird.

Same. I was absolutely fannish and wrote fanfic before I knew that was a thing because I didn't get online until I was 19. But yeah, everyone else thought that was weird until about Year 10 (age 15-16) when I managed to get a group of D&D playing friends, all boys. Getting online and finding fannish women was a dream come true.
