you are me, i am you, i agree with you 100000% GOD i was so disappointed in s2

kinda agree? playing a game on easy mode is absolutely fine for whatever reason BUT if you're reviewing or reccing a game and your experience with the game is only on a mode that significantly changes mechanics or skips some entirely, that should be mentioned somewhere. seems straightforward to me

in some genres it usually doesn't matter at all, like jrpgs. in others it matters a lot

There is a fundamental difference, IMHO, between playing a game and reviewing a game.

Playing a game is something you do for fun. You can engage with it through whatever lens you want -- easy settings, only play halfway, ignore X or Y feature entirely. Your fun, your rules.

Reviewing a game is something you do for profit, be it as part of your job, ad revenue, or clout. IMHO, that means you need to engage with it on a level befitting a professional in that field.

Yeah, sadly season 2 wasn't as good

Or have him get it wrong in a way with real consequences. Or have him get it right only when it's too late. Shit, I'd have been happy if he got things unrelated-to-the-case wrong once in a while.

Hmmm, not every review is professional though, if a friend is posting a game rec/review for their other friends, I'd appreciate knowing parts of their rec (like "you can use any class you want" or "this game doesn't require much grinding") may flat out not apply to people not playing on pure story mode

That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with story mode. But that rec/review only applies to that mode

(Anonymous) 2025-06-16 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's understandable, OP. On the other hand, I've never been able to stomach dystopian fiction. It's too depressing for me even when politics/current events/real life is going well.

How do other genres work out for you? It sounds counter-intuitive, but I like murder mysteries because even though something terrible happened, it makes me feel better to have competent people actively working to address the problem.

If you're only posting a rec or thoughts on a game for your friends, with no other intended audience at all, that's not a review, it's just a blog post sharing your personal feelings with your friends. I don't expect anything more from those sorts of personal recs than "this was my experience and I enjoyed it".

Anything else I want to know about the game itself, that's on me to find out.

It is a review if you're literally posting "I played this game and here's my review of it" which is a thing many people do? It'd be a bit strange to go up to them and be like "no, that doesn't count as a review because I said so"

There's no hard and fast rule about what counts as a review, only whether one is professional (paid) or not
