Occasionally you'll get one that consciously uses music from the right time period or music that fits the show and those are nice

Ofc you're out of luck if your canons are set in completely premodern times or something

I saw The Name of the Rose set to a Gregorian chant version of Losing My Religion.

I quite enjoy AMV's but not everything appeals to everyone and that's cool. I've never cared for fandom or ship playlists myself.

+1

AMVs are at their best when they're legit music videos, fitting the show(s) to the music. I've ever liked the ship ones, not once.

...then again I'm realizing that kids these days didn't grow up with MTV showing music videos and may not honestly know how to storyboard the clips to fit the music because they have no frame of reference. Only other AMVs. If your only guideline is another fan creation that kind of sucks, you're probably going to produce more suck.

Like with most things, 90% of them are bad. The other 10%, though, is amazing.

Only time I like them is when there is no actual sound from the media, just clips. I like discovering new music this way.

I don't mind some sounds, I think the vidder vordeel does a good job of incorporating a few sounds in their vids, but overall yeah. There was a trend in one fandom to have speaking lines from the show pop up all throughout the fanvids and it just didn't work.

Good for you? Taking into account how their heyday was like 20 years ago and they're mostly gone now I believe your opinion is the popular one.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-23 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean I think that's more because they take a lot of work, and a lot of fandom involvement is pretty low effort these days.

A question

(Anonymous) 2025-06-22 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Do we just call all fanvids AMVs now or do you think people still specifically mean Anime Music Videos? I think I use amv and fanvid pretty interchangeably depending on the crowd I'm in.

Re: A question

(Anonymous) 2025-06-23 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I always thought they were referred to as AMVs since that was the optimal file format to use for sharing in ye olden days.

holy shit I always thought it was AMATEUR music videos.... not anime... wtf

(Anonymous) 2025-06-23 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I never cared for them either. I don't even care if the music is fitting or not, I just don't care to watch clips set to music. I don't even like to watch songs' original music videos unless they have a clear and compelling storyline, let alone random bits of some show.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-23 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
Never been something I go looking for or care about much, but I do enjoy watching some when I come across them.
