Do you like to read about things you are or identify as in fic?

For example, I'm ace and avoid all ace fic like the plague. I want no hint of myself or my experience in my escapism tyvm. But my friend is the exact opposite and mainly prefers fic that have at least one character that aligns with her preferences or identity.

Nope. I'm boring, I don't want to read about myself.

Fic about something in which character happens to be [trait] - sure.

Fic that is centered around character being [trait] - nope.

This is where I fall, too.

And also no fic where it's clear the author is projecting themselves onto a character.

Yes, this.

Nope. There are always exceptions, but generally nope.

Nah, I'm ace and also don't really care for reading ace fic.

I'm bi, and for PWPs I tend to stick to F/F or M/M and not a lot of F/M.

tbh most of the ace fic I see have them wind up in relationships or having sex and that's just deeply uncomfortable to me so i avoid them like the plague

i don't care if some ace people have sex (tho i don't understand it) but the idea of it repulses me

I am borderline case. As a lot of people in this thread, I do not care for ace fics. In one of my fandoms there is an ace character and I don't mind occasional smut fics about him too. But there is this one writer who writes A LOT of smut with a lot of kinks and energetic sex. And this is just the level of nope for me. Like GIRL WHY, there are other characters, stop.

It just seems so...empty, although that may not be the right word to describe what I feel about it. It's like they're declaring a character "ace" so they can say they have representation, but then have the character act as if they aren't ace at all, or turn the fact of them being ace into part of the Will They or Won't They thing, like the identity just exists to create tension for a slow burn.

Yup, I sure do. But it can be annoying when someone has written a character that supposedly shares your identity or some other characteristic and they've gotten it really, really wrong*, so I think I understand why some people would rather skip stories that touch on their own identity.

*And just to be clear, I'm not talking about, like, a character just being different from me; I'm talking about certain things being wildly wrong, e.g. "that body part doesn't work the way you think it does."

I have, but kind of as a bad coping mechanism.
I won't go into detail, but fics with eating disorders or suicide themes were what I had sought after when I was at my lowest and going through it.

Not sexual identity but I enjoyed reading Jewish!character (or headcanon) or making certain characters who have vague background as Jewish!character (example: Jewish Bucky Barnes).

As for the sexuality, OP is it the fact that people do not understand asexuality that is the issue? Just wondering.

I absolutely love Jewish Bucky Barnes and I have NO idea why, lol.
