I think that some people have a skewed perspective of how mainstream fandom is, and assume it's like that for everyone, everywhere. Like sure, it's more mainstream than it was 20 years ago. But being hardcore into fandom is still pretty niche. People just forget that it is, because fandom can be such a weird echo chamber and people end up normalizing stuff that isn't really considered normal by the general population.

And frankly, some people just aren't great with the social skills or intelligence, so they don't understand why you wouldn't proudly talk a co-worker or your cousin's ear off about your OTP or go on an hour long meta discussion.
