People who don't have trouble falling asleep,

(Anonymous) 2025-06-26 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
How do you do it? Been laying awake for at least an hour every night (not scrolling on phone or anything).

My gf is like this, she lies down and is asleep within 10 mins and I have no idea how she does it. I’ve asked and she’s says she just thinks about an object and she drifts off. Meanwhile there’s me with a movie, a song, and several memes going through my head at the same time, and if I become aware that I’m falling asleep? Lmaoooo guess who has to spend another hour trying to fall asleep? D:

On the flip side once I’m asleep little wakes me up and I can drop off again within an hour so long as I get back into bed again. But once my gf is awake she’s awake and can’t get back to sleep. So we have different struggles.

I relax everything. If I must, I clench various parts and hold for a long count of five, then release and relax. I do square breathing and let anything that crosses my mind just go ( in other words, I meditate). I’m usually out like a light, but I do have my nights where I just can’t fall asleep. If that happens, after 30 minutes I get up so I don’t disturb my light sleeper partner and go read or work on my hobby for an hour, then try again.
Good luck, OP. Not being able to sleep is the worst.

An audiobook at low volume with a timer set. I close my eyes and watch the story and just drift off.

I flip between being able to fall asleep in 15 minutes and insomnia. I've noticed that if I have phosphenes, then I will most likely be able to sleep soon. If no, then it's insomnia night.

I go to YouTube and start a 10 hour video of rain sounds. Works most of the time.

Most of the time I can fall asleep easily without any tricks but sometimes I do struggle. The trick I use is to give myself 2 options either go to sleep or get up and do something tedious until I get drowsy. I hate tedious so falling asleep usually wins. Tedious for me would be housework I've delayed doing or sorting/reorganizing files on my computer. The point for me is if I get up it cannot be for anything fun so I may as well just go to sleep.

I just do. For me the answer is to go to sleep at the same time.

BUT I have trouble sleeping and I have various insomnia boosts in the middle of the night anyway.

I pretend I'm asleep. I used to struggle with sleep quite a bit, but I heard just resting as though you were asleep makes a difference, and after a lot of practice now I'm quite good at pretending and it seems to switch to real more quickly.

Stress.

Its just my bodily reaction to anxiety depression or any kind of emotional stress.

Its not quite at narcolepsy levels, but it is within literal seconds of me no longer fighting it. Fiancee says its creepy, like a robot powering down. And then some 16hrs later if I get the sandman a free hand, I'll wake up for a drink, a bite and a bathroom break, and go RIGHT back to sleep.

Born to snooze.

I'm bragging, I know. But really its just down to wiring, I think.

Take some really strong chamomile tea haha. Like 2-3 bags in a cup. If that doesn't work I just read one of my books. And on more extreme cases I just start thinking about work and that knocks me out hahaha

I have worked very hard to change my daily routine and create a healthy sleep cycle. It can still take me an hour to get to sleep some days but now that is rare.

Diet, exercise, having a good wind down towards beedtime routine.

And if it makes you feel better, I ready a study that said it is actually a sign of major sleep deprivation if you fall asleep immediately.

I'm a lucid dreamer so I tell myself stories (whether fanfiction style or just me investigating as a detective or something) and I fall asleep that way.
