Fucking same (except I'm very glad I read the books and have re-read them three times already).
But i noped out of the show three eps in. *sigh*

Yeah, I’m more a fan of the books than the show, by a huge margin. I'm still watching it, though not in hopes that it will change or get closer to the books. I just consider it fanfiction where I don't agree with all of the author's choices.

As a book fan that isn't watching the show, I'm curious what changes they've made that stand out to you?

This is all only my opinion.
Murderbot seems to act and express a lot more emotion than in the book, very early on.
Dr. Mensah and everyone else are portrayed in a really hippy-dippy, almost silly way, way too naive and goofy.
Random sexualizing of Murderbot by a character that went on way too long.
Those are the things that really stand out in the few eps/bits I watched.

The *inclusion* of scenes from Sanctuary Moon is awesome.

DA
I really really do not understand critic about them being hippy book people have. Yes, everyone a bit more comedic in tone including MB. But what is so weird and unprofessional in them... holding hands? This ritual isn't more weird and stupid than saying grace or wearing a hijab - it is part of a culture. Frankly, thinking about I find a lot of Christian rituals way more fucking stupid and unprofessional. Unprofessional to paint your place in more pleasing colors even if you are not getting your deposit? No one done that? Really? Oh no, this peaceful people are being extremely naive about being in a conflict zone. Yes, they must be unprofessional and stupid. /s

I am sorry for rumbling, but this is absolutely annoy me

...it's got nothing to do with holding hands or painting anything. Everything they do would be great - AWESOME - if it were remotely connected to stuff they did in the books. It really isn't, and it's just weird and yes, annoying. Fuck Xian rituals - i hate all that shite. These are simply not the people I got to know in the books, and absolutely loved.

If you like, yay you! Go on and enjoy the heck out of it. I simply do not, and prefer the book characters over the series ones.

*striked. they did anything in book 1 like at all?

It is good that people have different aspects of this universe to enjoy!

Are you asking did they do anything in the first book like they're doing on the show? I don't have a great memory, so i can't say 100% yes or no, but the way they acted on the show as professionals AND as friends/a team just struck me VERY oddly, differently, and just gave me this huge 'this is NOT THEM!' feeling all the time.

I love that people are loving it, it's awesome there's a show, i'm glad we can all find the format we enjoy the most.

I feel like the whole crew is being character assassinated as incompetent hippy-dippy idiots, but particularly Mensah and Gurathin. I got the impression that Murderbot liked Mensah partially for her competence and because she remained calm and in control despite her heart-rate picking up, whereas in the show when she isn't having a panic-attack she's busy emoting at Murderbot and making it uncomfortable. And Gurathin...urgh, he comes across as a weasly creep, breaking into Mensah's room and sniffing her pillow. Blech!

Yup. EXACTLY. I just was so disappointed. And Pin-Lee is supposed to be this cool, collected, ruthless lawyer and she's just so...wishy-washy and kind of whiny or something, I dunno.
Just not enjoying.

DA My main issue is everyone is a lot less competent than in the books - I think most of the other changes are understandable to make it work as a TV show. Like, Murderbot does come off more emotional but that's because we can actually see its face, not just read its denials. But in the book there's a lot of Murderbot either saying it's incompetent or implying the crew is, and then we get to see them actually being super badass. In the show there's a lot more of everybody just bumbling around for real.

Also they've been pushing hard on the "Murderbot is ace because it doesn't have genitals" where I feel like the books were always careful to say Murderbot would be ace even if it was fully human, just like some humans are. And that leaves a bit of a sour taste.

Yeah. I am, unfortunately, incredibly easily influenced on things like internal narrator voice so I've avoided watching it because I love the books as my brain interprets them. I've read the series numerous times over and don't want them to change (or ruined).

I do hope the series does well and people enjoy it!

I think I could enjoy it, but I’d have to pretend it wasn’t connected to the books except in name. Maybe like a spin-off, you know?

(Anonymous) 2025-06-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
The key is to pretend it's an unauthorized in-universe fictionalization of Bharadwaj's documentary. It really helps. (There's already a few good fics on AU where the book characters encounter the show as an in-universe adaptation, if you need help sustaining that belief.)

Ooh, good choice.

....links? Maybe? :D

(Anonymous) 2025-06-27 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but this is the same tactic I take with the Star Wars Prequels. The over-the-top dialogue and inconsistencies with the original canon stop being annoying when you treat the prequels like a in-universe holodrama made after Episode VI. Instead, I get to imagine Luke telling Leia that he can't be jealous about not growing up a princess when she only had the Alderaanian royal guard watching out for her while he was protected by sand.

I think I didn't like the books enough because I am enjoying the show. They are different, but I am having fun. But probably because I do not remember most of the plot and I hate constant parade of new absolutely bland faces in the books even if I understand the narrative choice. Probably I should make my own secret :'D

I feel your pain, though not on this particular book series/tv series. I was really into the Wheel of Time books, and I could not get into the TV show at all because none of it matched what I had in my head from the books. This is why if I read the book I tend to avoid the TV or I try to watch the TV show/movie before I read the books.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-28 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm lucky in that I see them as completely different stories. I like the tv series for what it is and I love the books for what they are, but in my head they don't really crossover one with the other. I think it helps that what I really like the most is, as usual, fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-04 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just treating it as fanfic and it's working for me. And frankly, it's worth it just for the Sanctuary Moon clips. OH MY GOD *giggles helplessly*
