Funny, if people ask for recs with no context on what they like, I figure they deserve the no context answers they get.

If it’s “what’s the best X”, I treat that as a discussion prompt. Don’t just say the name of a thing, squeeze out a sentence fragment – an adjective even! – about why it’s so great.

…that would be a broad topic, though. Compared to, “What series is like X?” which would invite the majority of responses to be titles without justifications.

And it still seems silly to downvote, especially because that has actual consequences. You’re the one and only asshole in that scenario.

Oh, 100% silly. And probably an asshole, yeah. Though not sure about actual consequences, it feels more symbolic than anything. I’d like to think it affects what rises to the top or the answers people give, but in a big subreddit, it doesn’t move the needle at all.

Yeah in a big subreddit it really doesn’t have any impact. And in this thread I’m the one and only asshole so I apologize. I got downvoted to hell for giving a straight answer to a direct question and because I have never farmed karma it fucked me over bad. I can’t engage on subs where I’ve been active before and I admit I’m incredibly bitter and projecting. For that I am sorry.

Ouch, that really sucks, but I didn’t think you were being a jerk here at all.

I also make a point of not downvoting anyone into the negatives. That feels shitty, when at best I want to adjust what rises to the top of the pile. I don’t like “what’s the best redemption story” being dominated by low-effort comments just naming the most popular movies or TV shows, especially when people lower down have given some thought behind their answers.

Oops, that was me, in case it wasn’t clear.

I think most would agree those are legit downvotes. I think because I’m in smaller subs I’m so accustomed to specific questions and requests. Anything with justification or qualifiers will get ignored and usually the single titles get upvoted just to show agreement instead of bloating the comments.
