Yeah, I usually read while watching a movie or on youtube.

if there is one thing that is impossible fro me to do is reading a story and watching a movie/youtube video. Like, how do you see it unfolding into your mind? Or do you not see pictures while you read? I get reading comments/forums posts and while watching TV, but reading fiction and watching movies at the same time? How do you reconcile those different images?
Also, is it fun? You are like half watching sometimes potentially entertaining while half reading a story. Does it not ruin both those experiences at the same time?
Not judging here. I'm really curious. Do you prefer multitasking like this or watching/reading one thing at the time?

I have a friend that does this all the time and I am as baffled as you. If I'm reading I am concentrating so much and there is just no room for anything else. I guess if you took breaks and looked at the movie/other thing in between? But that would ruin the flow for me.

And if I'm doing something while watching a show/movie then I always end up having to rewind because I miss stuff become I got engrossed in the other thing. The only multitasking I can do is audiobooks/podcasts and something like crocheting or driving.

I think I'm one of those people who don't see pictures when they try to imagine something. If you tell me to think of a pink bear, I don't actually see it in my brain.

I only second screen when it "less important" stuff. So, fanfiction and a Let's Play. Or a comedy show or reruns. Or a casual video game and a youtube video. Whatever I'm watching is more in the background so I sometimes miss stuff. That is why I don't do that when watching something serious. Sometimes I'll stop reading for a bit if something big happens.

I find it fun and don't feel like anything is being ruined. I'd be incredibly bored if I could only do one. I love multitasking with casual stuff and single tasking with serious stuff. I don't second screen when reading original books that I actually want to remember.

Not Kaijin, but I pretty much need background noise to focus, so it’s not uncommon for me to put something on the TV and then do something else(read, cook, clean, etc)while that’s on and a sometimes half pay attention to it or I don’t and it’s just white noise for my brain. If I don’t I’ll get distracted by anything and everything and not actually do what I planned to. I don’t tend to put on anything I actually want to watch properly, it’s usually an old fave movie or something.

For me at least it’s a symptom of my ADHD and my brain needing a baseline level of stimulation so it doesn’t get locked off course.

Yeah, I NEED background noise. When I'm reading a book, I have a movie score on. And even when working, I always have at least one ear bud to listen to music or podcasts.

I love, love, love putting movie scores on when reading a book. I wish I could have an earbud in at work but I work in a store so that’s a no go, I can at least put music on if I’m putting stock away out back. Watch me zooooooom at that when I do lol.

I always try to pick a thematically similar book in the hopes it will enhance the experience and help me actually remember the book.

Currently reading the Blackwater series while listening to the Winter's Bone score. I read The Deep by Nick Cutter while listening to the Under the Skin score.

[takes notes]

I shall find these scores tomorrow because I always love discovering new music to do stuff to.

If I knew how to share my Spotify account, I would. I listen almost exclusively to scores (movie, tv, game). I love them so much. ;_;

I see people saying this a lot and it always strikes me as funny, because my ADHD is the exact opposite. I cannot function with too many sources of stimulation going. I'll admit, sometimes I definitely enjoy having multiple things on but the end result is I don't actually take in any of them. If I actually want to read or focus, I just can't with multiple sources.

(Funny like, haha we all have the same diagnosis but that could mean wildly different things isn't the world weird. Not funny like making fun of something or disbelieving.)

DA anon who asked the question above and yeah, I have ADHD too! I also get overstimulated and anxious if I multitask for too long. I need as much deep focused sessions as possible, if not my ADHD become worse and I become very scatterbrained. A little bit is OK, fun even, with stuff like watching trash TV and reading comments on the internet, but if I need to focus then I have to eliminate as many distractions as possible. Even instrumental background music is too much for me.
Funny enough though when I used loud music to isolate all the other distracting stimulus of my noisy home. Now I can't take it anymore. I need silence! (and like I say, while reading books/fics I create images in my head so having two simultaneous inputs would fuck that experience up)
ADHD is so random...

AYRT - yeah it sounds like you and I have very similar styles of ADHD!

Other anon.

This is so interesting! And I mean that sincerely too, it’s just cool to see how we can vary despite similarities. Like for me I do my best fic writing with a soundtrack playing and I even have writing playlists because it just helps me get in the zone so much better than silence. I’m glad you know what works for you though because fuck knows managing ADHD is a a nightmare.

AYRT.

Yeah it’s such a large spectrum and what someone might experience others don’t, like I have the time blindness part but instead of being late I am instead always stupidly early because I hate having people wait on me. But if I don’t need to be anywhere? Oh where did those three hours go? Lmao.

For me it’s the internal chatter that gets so fucking loud if I don’t give it something to chew on, and that’s usually a movie or a show, it helps me actually have rails my brain otherwise considers guidelines at best.
