Nope This has been a phenomena for a long time, it’s just that it mostly only cropped up in het fandoms where there was “a chance” at their ships becoming canon. It’s gotten more pervasive across fandoms in general when canon queer romances started cropping up more frequently in media.

The tinhatters have always been here but they’ve breached fucking containment and infect the rest of fandom too.
