She's supposed to be a boy, not a man, because with casting a boy of that age there's a risk of them noticeably growing before they finished filming. Not that that invalidates your point at all, just wanted to say.

Yeah, it's the same reason that young boy characters in cartoons/anime are typically played by female voice actors. If the show goes on for several seasons, there's no risk of their voice changing partway through.

while we're at it, if Peter Pan is supposed to be a boy why is he always played by skinny women instead of actual boys?

Because then they don’t have to worry about puberty or child labor laws.

then what about all those other movies with young boys in them?

Unlike theatre, where performances are usually in the evenings (tricky in accordance with child labour laws), shooting times for movies take place whenever. Puberty has been a bit tricky for longer running shoots or series, but usually, movie shoots are not that long that you get a whole puberty development in one shoot.

... you know, the performance time being an issue with child labor laws hadn't even occurred to me, but yeah, around here all of the plays/musicals are performed in the evenings and don't end until close to 10 PM or sometimes later. It makes perfect sense that it would be hard to cast actual children for that.

Ever see Terminator 2? The kid in that visibly changed during filming and his voice also broke. There are a lot of examples of that.

For the musical of Billy Elliot, they had literally dozens of boys at a time training for the show. Each boy would be cast when they were way too young, then attend rehearsals and other training for years. They usually only performed before an audience for around 6 months before they outgrew the part. And there were usually at least 4 boys at a time who rotated out for performances.

I had a formative experience where he was played by a busty young woman in a panto. But recently he mostly seems to be played by boys.
