On call is bullshit and should never have become a thing.

That’s absolutely the sane response, as far as I’m concerned.

It’s one thing to be a hero for a given disaster or for some defined shift. That thing where superheroes feel like they have to be constantly on call for their whole city/country/world? That feels like a great recipe for killing yourself through a combination of overwork and guilt.

I know it gets covered in some superhero stories, but it should honestly be a serious issue for so many of them.

That isn't selfish. It isn't selfish to have personal needs or to want some time for yourself. It's a necessary part of being human. Don't be so tough on yourself. If you want to help people that's a good quality to have. Don't let all or nothing thinking swallow it.

I don't think you're selfish or self-centered so much as crossed the threshold from childhood fantasy to adult reality. Superhero stuff is power fantasy for kids who don't know yet what is possible for people to do in real life and like to imagine. They're hero stories about good vs. evil. They're adventure stories about people who live constantly interesting and challenging and exciting lives. A lot of superhero stuff recently, though (e.g. The Boys, Invincible) has written what superheroing looks like from the adult perspective and the answer is "hellish."

Like, this is dangerous work, the people drawn to it would have an unusual profile, it would be really hard to maintain a home life, and the people in your life who know you're a superhero would be constantly worried about you. That's what a superhero story looks like when it's written to match reality.

For a lot of superhero stories, that's not what they're about, though. They're about cool wizards who work together to save the world and banter entertainingly while they do it. It's a different genre/form of storytelling, and some things you're meant to ignore or they don't strike you as relevant. But having the experience of working in an on-call job and realizing superheroing would share some of the worst elements with those jobs isn't laziness, it's just personal experience ruining the fantasy, lol.

Eh. When I call bad characterization, it isn't about the character having flaws, canon or otherwise. It's about them reacting to things or doing things that seem OOC and more geared towards the author's personal itch-scratching, favored tropes and kinks, that kind of thing. Like you can go through their stuff and see a bunch of fics that are all generic porny in the same way and they've just inserted a different fandom and character names so they can have two people fucking.
