I know for me, fandom works best if there are plot holes to work around. And I don’t have the patience to get through most books with plot holes. Ergo, no book fandom.

This is usually me as well. There are loads of movies I love but the fandom drive just isn't really there for me, I only have two exceptions and that's the PJ Tolkien movies for whatever reason those scratch my itch for shipping, but otherwise it's TV only and sometimes games.

My thing is there has to be more to work with for me to fandom. So with movies or books, it has to be a whole series of them, not just a single book.

There are books I'm a big fan of, but no books I'm following the fandom for.

For me it's the medium, mostly. If I were in fandom I'd write fic, and writing fic for a book feels somehow awkward to me, like making a fan comic for a comic or fan music for a musician. The original that I'm a fan of is already has those things covered.

I really love this perspective! I can't relate, but I can see how you'd feel that way.

Fandom is all about fic to me, and I think I would compare the fic to the book too much. I HAVE read a few things tied to The Secret History that were good, though. Yuletides, maybe.

The other thing is that I am inspired by hot guys. I need to see the hot guy on my screen to ship him with the other hot guy.

TV shows and sometimes movie franchises are the only ones I get involved in because my primary interest is UST, shipping, and relationship dynamics in general. It’s pretty rare to encounter a book series with UST, romances are usually pretty obvious (and often very boring) from the beginning, and the relationship dynamics between all characters is pretty standard and well established from the beginning.

TV shows are more likely to have a shakeup in character dynamics and bring in new characters, too. Big movie franchises sometimes have the same thing but it’s not as common as it is with shows.

What a well designed secret! Nice work!

Same, but generally I think thats because there is more to work with. Especially older shows where there were 22 episodes in a season for 5+ seasons.

Me too, OP. I don't know what makes up the chemical mixture that lures me into a fandom...something about an ensemble cast with enough depth to make a social group, and that rarely happens in films. And with books, I guess I need a visual?

wildly off topic, but the VISCERAL dread that gripped me when I saw that toy in a jar...
