Archers, opinion?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, anyone do archery? Quick question. Assuming someone is right handed, which arm do they hold the bow with and which arm is used to hold and draw the arrow back?

Standard would be a right handed person uses their right hand to draw the bow.

This guy also has a lot of fun facts about archery (among other things), especially archery in media and why a lot of it doesn't make sense from a realism perspective.

It's been a couple of decades, but I'm right handed and I held the bow with my left and drew with my right.

This isn’t my thing and I’m no expert. But my town has a competitive archery team and on a recent FB post for the town, they praised one of the archers for adapting to competition archery so well despite being left handed. I don’t know if it’s their league or if this is standard but apparently everyone must shoot right handed. But the archer was self taught and naturally used their left hand to draw the bow back because it is their dominant hand.

When I did archery I held the bow left-handed and drew it with the right.

you draw with your dominant hand. that hand needs to control the string tension, the arrow's aim, and the point where the arrow's notch is nocked to the string. think of it like billiards - the non-dominant hand is only there to stabilize the stick where it meets the table while the dominant hand controls angle, speed, and force. a billiards cue stick rests on the non-dominant hand almost the same as it does where a bow and arrow shaft are held up (almost but not quite, obviously, but the point is how you visualize yourself holding the equipment).

All of this, and adding in that it's not just your hand dominance that matters in archery, it's your eye dominance as well. GENERALLY your dominant eye will be on the same side as your dominant hand, but that isn't always the case and when it's not, it can make things a lot harder.

It makes it so hard. I’m a lefty with a right dominant eye. Shooting things is a major pain.

Oh man, I can only imagine. I'm both right hand and eye dominant so I've never had a problem on that front, but there were a couple of people in my class like you and they definitely had a much harder time.

DA
Yeah, my right hand and left eye are dominant. So basically I shoot depending on my stance and vibes
