My partner is in a discord that skews young (college/early adult) and pretty left. They have a no IRL politics rule because no one wants to moderate it. They had a single, opt-in channel, but I think they closed that, too. In a space full of largely agreeing people, it would devolve into doom spirals and nothing helpful.

I appreciate there being room for politics discussion in most places, but it doesn't need to be everywhere. We all know that the current landscape is a tirefire and that everyone's scared. We don't need to make every space a vessel for that fear.

Can't speak for OP but every fandom discord I've seen with a dedicated politics section is either full of shitty boomer Facebook trump memes or leftist doomerism and/or infighting about whatever geopolitical thing they just read a headline-and-only-a-headline about five minutes ago.

"It's contained!" Yeah no it's not. People remember who posted what and drag that drama out of containment in 0.1 seconds

yes on the doom spirals. i generally agree with the people who are spiraling but it's so depressing and never does anything helpful
