I thought he was cute and hilarious when I was a kid in the 90s but now I find him insufferable and the little voice annoying.

A young man being boyish IS cute. A middle aged+ man being an adult child is less cute and harder to find funny.

I still enjoy his older stuff, but he just got too old to keep doing the same thing and having it land the same as it used to. He was already 32 in the Waterboy, pushing that overgrown boy -> man child age limit already

I'd honestly not thought about it like that but it does make me feel better. He has been one of those "cringe to look back on" crushes, but you're right that it was different when he was young and on SNL. I never really cared for any of his movies, feeling he's a better in small doses kind of humor.
